 Our Tip of the Month
We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays one of your most valuable assets. The best way we know to help you with that is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don't know that could save you thousands of dollars.

Landscaping
If you are going to plant trees and shrubs around you new home, here are some guidelines: In Texas, shade trees should be primarily on the east, west and northwest sides of a house. Also, we encourage you to carefully select the type the tree being considered. Decide what you really want from this tree or shrub - shade, fall color, or just eye appeal.

Do you need a deciduous tree to shade an outside air-conditioning unit in the summer, while letting sunlight through in the winter? Do you want a line of evergreens to provide a windbreak in the winter and privacy the rest of the year? Another factor to consider is maintenance. Are the trees or shrubs drought resistant, or will they require large amounts of water? Along with these considerations, you should also think about their location in relation to plumbing lines, power lines, and your foundation.

 June Is Great Outdoors Month

June 2010, the 7th annual Great Outdoors Month, highlights the benefits of fresh air, exercise, and volunteering at the park.

Another focus of this special month is the younger generation. Kids, teens and 20-somethings are spending too much time with their computers, computer games and television sets.

In June, we hope to lure them outdoors more often. Maybe in the months that follow, they will continue to enjoy playing catch,Lake Sky jumping rope, swimming and water skiing, or playing
tennis.

Let young people know that volunteering at the park will help them meet new people while doing good work. Whether they help to build a shelter, clean up the picnic area or sell popcorn at a ball game, they will be spending time outdoors and meeting people who could become their friends.

June is the best time of year to take advantage of all the activities available at parks. Local parks have gone to a lot of expense to make sure their ball diamonds, tennis courts, swimming pools and hiking trails are ready for you.

But don't let the kids have all the fun. No matter what your age, going to the park is always enjoyable.

As always, take sunscreen with you. Better still, apply it at home before you leave. When it's time to "sit a spell," find a big tree and sit in the shade.

Making It Easier for Dads and Kids to Bond

In recent years, fathers have been spending more time with their children than everDad and Boys before.

It's good news for the kids. Studies show that kids with involved dads are more likely to form intimate relationships as adults and will be happier or more confident and independent.

In her book, Fathering Your School-age Child, author Armin Brott reports other studies that show kids with active dads perform better in school and are more likely to attend college.

The benefits begin with a newborn. A father's bonding with the baby paves the way for bonding later on.

Moms can help by having faith in the dad and his way of play, which is usually different from a mother's. And moms can plan play times and activities that dads and kids can do together.

Uncles, grandfathers and friends can be part of it. They can invite the dad and his child or children on an outing, which also gives the mother a break so she can rest or catch up on her email.
