 REPLACE YOUR ASPHALT
SHINGLE ROOF
Asphalt shingles properly applied to a roof are extremely
durable, but eventually they will need replacement.
How do you select the type of shingle and the roofing
contractor? Do you tear off the shingles or roof over
them? What important details of the installation and
the roof replacement contract should you know?

 Our Tip of the Month
We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays one of your most valuable assets. The best way we know to help you with that is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don't know that could save you thousands of dollars.
A Question Home Buyers Often Ask Is...

..."How can I tell if the main water valve is on or off?"

Following are some answers:

Main water valve when there is a meter:
Usually there are two valves associated with the metered water input line. If both are rotary valves then ensure that the valve is rotated to the left as far as it can go. To shut it off you rotate the valve to the right as far as it can go.
2peoplecruise  This kind of valve can "freeze" in position and may be very difficult to turn. If you force it you may end up with a leak that won't quit. If you have "frozen" rotating valves call a plumber.
In some cases, if the top of the valve is in line with the pipe, it is ON, if it is perpendicular, it is OFF. This is called a quarter turn valve. 2peoplecruiseThese valves are less likely to "freeze" and are easy to turn. Usually preferred.
Some locations have both a rotary valve and a quarter turn valve. When you have two valves, one should be before the meter and the other will be after the meter.
Other shut off valves are usually with supply lines under the fixtures they serve. These can be used to shut off the water if the water leak is down line from them or in the fixture.
Also, there is usually a shut off valve on the inlet pipe to the water heater. This can be used to shut off water to all hot water pipes in the house.

May Is Deck Safety Month
 Is yours up to snuff?
Deck..CollapsIn the past five years there have been more than 350 reported injuries and 17 deaths as a result of deck failures. Millions of decks are built incorrectly, have not been properly maintained or are beyond their lifespan of approximately 10-15 years, depending on the construction materials used and the location of the deck..
"The deck is the most dangerous part of the house," warns Dr. Don Bender, a deck safety researcher and director of the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory at Washington State University. "However through proper design, construction and maintenance, most deck failures are completely avoidable.".
To evaluate the safety of their decks, deck owners should look for five warning signs that a deck is unsafe: loose connections (for example, a wobbly railing), missing connections (for example, the deck is just nailed to the side of the house), corrosion, rot and cracks. The two critical areas in a deck collapse are typically the deck's connection to the house and the railings.

Call us to have your deck professionally inspected.

Thinking about Your Communications Week, Your Words

There are people who keep their to-do lists in a notebook. At the end of each week, they can look at it and be pleased about their successes and aggravated by their procrastinations.

Here's another good idea: At the end of the week, think backCell phone on the words you have spoken to co-workers and people who work for you. You won't have much trouble remembering various conversations.

On the plus side, you will think of your words of encouragement, those that made people feel uplifted, and words that made them be engaged and cooperative.

Your second list won't be as nice. Stop to think of words that were harmful. What did you say about someone whose name came up at a meeting? Did you say something that made someone feel ashamed if they overheard your remarks? Did you criticize people rather than the jobs they did?

Some combinations of words are powerful in a positive way: "I made a mistake." "What is your opinion?" "We ..."

There are many others. A business professor at Indiana Wesleyan University says it's valuable to intentionally use positive expressions like these.

The power of carefully chosen words can build trust and create the kind of workplace where people want to contribute their very best.

Lowering the Light Bill

Consumers have been conscientious about buying energy efficient appliances and light bulbs, but according to the UK Energy Research Centre many are now actually using more energy.

Light BulbBefore energy efficient appliances and lights, consumers carefully turned off lights and limited electric use. However, after buying an energy-efficient dishwasher, they run it more often or when it's not full. Studies also show that people who use energy-efficient lights lose 5 percent to 12 percent of expected utility bill savings by leaving lights on longer.

With energy-efficient heating and cooling, studies show consumers feel less guilty about setting the heat a degree or two higher in winter and or lower in summer.

By doing these things, they actually defeat the purpose of saving energy.

  It Was Safe!

30 years ago, 20 years ago, even 5 years ago the home was safe. Dad then added a taped extension cord, then an unsafe space heater, ignored the burned out lights bulbs too high to reach and the hazards just happened until the unthinkable occurred. Nobody suspected they would die of the hazard. It just happened one night. The contractor that came to check the furnace didn't notice the crumbling chimney that blocked the furnace. He only saw the furnace. They were good parents and caring citizens, but nobody knew it was time to check the safety of their home. We sent home health people to take care of them in their home. We were looking at the people and didn't see their home. Some of the Many Reasons For Home Safety Checkups:

Electrical hazards

Furnace hazards

Auxiliary & Space Heaters

Missing or inoperative CO & Smoke detectors

Trip and fall hazards

Improperly stored chemicals

Loose or missing stairs and rails

Unsanitary Plumbing conditions

Improper hot water temperature

Inadequate ventilation

Improperly stored chemicals

Moisture intrusion, leaks

Environmental health hazards
