How to keep basements dry.
Simple, rutine maintenance can keep your basment dry and prevent damage that cause costly repairs. Since most basement damage occurs slowly, over many years, you may not notice a problem until there is a water leak, or a major water leak. Lets walk through the systems protecting your basment to see how they work and how to maintain them.

Our Tip of the Month
We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays one of your most valuable assets. The best way we know to help you with that is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don't know that could save you thousands of dollars.
Air Conditioning and Heating In combined central air conditioning and heating systems, the filter should be changed at least once a month to allow your system to operate at peak efficiency. One trick you might use to help remember to change your filter is to make a note with your house payment and change the filter every time you pay it. | |

Picking Social Influences That Are Positive
You can cultivate self-control by studying those who have it.
You're more likely to lose weight if your friends are losing too. Want to quit smoking? You'll have a better chance if you associate with quitters. And you'll be a better worker if you admire a person with a great work ethic.
A new study by the University of Georgia shows that even thinking about someone with good self-control makes others more likely to have it. This was the first study to show that self-control is contagious in social or work groups.
The effect was so powerful that just seeing the name of someone with good or bad self-control flashed on a screen changed the behavior of volunteers.
By exhibiting self-control yourself, you can help people around you. If you stick to an exercise program, your self-control could help others develop the habit. Your example could urge someone to stick with their health, financial or career goals, say the psychologists.
But the opposite is true as well. Those with poor self-control influence others negatively. Because people mimic the behavior of others, their examples could result in the spread of characteristics such as smoking, drug use and obesity through their social networks.
Remember as kids our parents told us to be careful who we hang around. Choose your friends wisely.
Have you ever watched the TV show "The Biggest Loser"? It is inspiring to see overweight people exercising, eating better and losing weight.
As always, the decisions about what you will or will not do are up to you. You can't blame your overweight pal if you take a second piece of cake.
Fortunately, you don't have to change all of your social or work contacts in order to take advantage of the new findings. Thinking about someone with good self-control, whether it be a friend or a person in history, will inspire you to develop the same trait.
Who can you influence in a positive way? Who will influence you in a positive way?
Fear less, hope more. Eat less, chew more. Whine less, breathe more. Talk less, say more. Love more, and all good things will be yours...Swedish proverb

| May Is Deck Safety Month
Is yours up to snuff?
In the past five years there have been more than 350 reported injuries and 17 deaths as a result of deck failures. Millions of decks are built incorrectly, have not been properly maintained or are beyond their lifespan of approximately 10-15 years, depending on the construction materials used and the location of the deck.. "The deck is the most dangerous part of the house," warns Dr. Don Bender, a deck safety researcher and director of the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory at Washington State University. "However through proper design, construction and maintenance, most deck failures are completely avoidable.". To evaluate the safety of their decks, deck owners should look for five warning signs that a deck is unsafe: loose connections (for example, a wobbly railing), missing connections (for example, the deck is just nailed to the side of the house), corrosion, rot and cracks. The two critical areas in a deck collapse are typically the deck's connection to the house and the railings.
Call us to have your deck professionally inspected.

Plan Your Vacation, Then Let Staffers Run the Show
Some managers and business owners skipped their vacations last year (and maybe the year before) because they felt the operation couldn't run without them.
It's not a good idea for several reasons. First, everyone needs time off to relax and recharge. Second, those who are next in line to run the business become disappointed because you apparently have no faith in them.
When you finally take time off, really take it. Don't work all day on your BlackBerry, advises writer Carol Hymowitz.
One retired CEO says managers should not make themselves indispensible. Managers should take a week or two off instead of three-day weekends. The people in place to run the show while they're gone have been trained to do it and should have the opportunity to show that they can.
That doesn't mean managers should be out of touch completely. Emergencies still require attention. Just decide what they really are. |
