Toilet Paper Returns After Flush
We are having problems with a toilet installed in 1949. At times it flushes perfectly, but often after the waste has been flushed, the paper returns. Twice a plumber has removed the stool and snaked it but found nothing clogging it. Is there a possible solution short of replacement?

Keep the Home Fires Burning

FireplaceandtreeOh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful! That crackling, cheerful dancing fire in the fireplace is sure to kindle deep appreciation from family and guests on chilly winter days.

Throughout the ages, the home hearth has been the center of cheer on dreary days.

For some, keeping the home fires burning, is virtually a sacred tradition. Mary-Anne Robb resident of the stately Cothay Manor in Somerset, England keeps the fire burning in her Great Hall from October until Easter. "Old houses," she says, "should smell of beeswax and wood smoke."

Perhaps with the rising costs of fuel, more homes will rekindle the tradition of a merry fire. If you are considering building a holiday fire, one of the first things you have to do is choose wood. Of course different woods smell differently and burn for different periods. Dense hard wood such as oak and ash are slow, lazy burners. Spruce or cedar smell lovely but burn quickly. If you cut your own wood, cut your logs to size immediately then let them season a year.

A fire can take an hour or so to warm up a room, so plan ahead if you want to have one as a backdrop for dinner.

Robb recommends keeping a good layer of ash in the often-used fireplace, since it holds heat and cuts down on smoke. Remove some ash every two weeks or so, depending on the size of your fireplace. You can distribute it over your rose beds.

The editors at County Life UK recommend purchasing a firelighter to start your fire. To lay a proper fire, crisscross a layer of extremely dry kindling. Above that put two small, very dry logs balanced against each other as an arch. Start the kindling and logs with your firelighter. When the flames are high and going well, add coal or larger logs.

First Nighter's Look Forward to Big, Inexpensive Celebrations This Year

newyearsclockFirst Nighter's is a family-style celebration held in cities across North America. The no-alcohol event may begin early in the day and last until after midnight. The First Night events for New Year's Eve have definitely drawn increasing crowds every year.

And 2009 promises to be bigger than ever. That's not just because it's less expensive than some events or because it's free. First Night organizers say the economy could draw more participants this year.

In many cities, the entertainment is free, Boston being the most notable. The city will have more than 1,000 artists performing, 200 exhibitions and two big fireworks displays.

This biggest free event in the country is expected to draw record crowds. About a million people are expected to gather in New York's Times Square to see performances and the big ball drop. This year the drop will be orchestrated by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former president Bill Clinton.

Cities that charge for the First Night events ask a modest price for what they have to offer. For First Night Akron, a $10 ticket brings 100 performances of music and more.

Some cities have eliminated fireworks from their celebrations for economic reasons, according to USA Today. To find out if a city near you is hosting an event Google "First Night" + City.

MAINTENANCE TIP

Landscaping

Think about your landscaping through the winter so you will have it all planned for spring.

If you are going to plant trees and shrubs around
your new home, here are some guidelines: In
Florida, shade trees should be primarily on the
east, west and northwest sides of a house. Also,
We encourage you to carefully select the type the
tree being considered.  Decide what you really
want from this tree or shrub - shade, fall color, or
just eye appeal.  Do you need a deciduous tree to
shade an outside air-conditioning unit in the
summer, while letting sunlight through in the
winter?  Do you want a line of evergreens to
provide a windbreak in the winter and privacy the
rest of the year?  Another factor to consider is
maintenance.  Are the trees or shrubs drought
resistant, or will they require large amounts of
water?  Along with these considerations, you
should also think about their location in relation to
plumbing lines, power lines, and your foundation.
