Be Thankful for Healthier Holiday Feasts
Try this for a healthier day: * When cooking, avoid adding hidden calories to foods, like lots of butter to mashed potatoes and extra oils to vegetables. Try a sweet potato recipe that doesn't call for marshmallows. * Use whole wheat bread or brown rice to make stuffing. Add nuts or seeds for crunch and flavor. * For appetizers, offer low-calorie munchies instead of fatty foods. Put out bowls of different-colored vegetables without sauces or with fat-free dips. Guests can snack on them while visiting and waiting for dinner. * Have plenty of water on the table and readily available. Make non-caloric beverages an option. * Start dinner with a salad as the first course. Use a lot of greens and offer low-fat salad dressings. * Have outstanding vegetable side dishes that have lots of flavor but not as many calories. * Make gravy a choice instead of serving turkey or beef in gravy. * If you are serving at a buffet, make portions fairly small. People can always come back for more. * Take a break after dinner and before dessert. Get people up and moving. Some families take a traditional walk after dinner. It's more fun than a nap. * Offer fruit and custard or pudding along with pie for dessert. The basic ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner are healthy. It's what you do to them that makes the difference between healthy and not..

How to Invite the Birds to Your House
Wouldn't it be nice to be visited each day by cheerful, chirping birds that you could watch from your window. They're pretty and fun to watch, but in colder climes their natural food is scarce. Many die of starvation, especially if there is snow on the ground. Naturalists at Wild Birds Unlimited say feeders increase the survival rate of birds by 50 percent. Now is a good time to create your own bird haven. Supplying proper food, water and shelter is the key. Birds must build up before the coldest part of winter. They need body fat to keep them warm on cold nights. And they need the protective cover of trees and shrubs about 15 feet from feeders. A mix of black oil sunflower seed, white millet and safflower seeds will attract most local birds. They will not eat mixes that have a lot of cracked corn, wheat and milo seed. Hopper-type feeders with landing platforms work well and allow some seed to fall for ground-feeding birds. But don't scatter a lot of seed on the ground. Either squirrels will eat it or it will rot. Feeders can be made from wood or plastic. Ground feeders with roofs and open sides keep seed dry. Squirrels often get to the seed, but they are hungry too. The Audubon Society recommends putting seed out early in the morning and topping it off at night. Feed the birds regularly and watch the show!

Staying Well
Benefit From the End of Daylight Savings Time On Saturday, October 31, remember to set your clocks back an hour. You'll get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday, November 1, if you get up at the usual time. An extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning won't sound like a big benefit unless you are usually up early for church. The good news is that your body's adjustment period will continue for several days afterward. The return to standard time can help you catch up if you haven't been getting quite enough rest. It will feel good to turn over and go back to sleep when the clock tells you it's an hour earlier than your body thought it was. One key to the benefit: Get to bed when the wall clock says you should, instead of staying up an hour longer.

Outdoor decorating for the Christmas Season
Thanksgiving is long over, Halloween is just finished and now? The Christmas lights go on! It's a more recent development in Thanksgiving celebrations but one that is embraced by many people. It's smart to decorate trees before late November because the weather is more favorable. Then, the first lighting takes place on the evening of the installation for family and friends to see. On Dec 1st the light go on for the month of December . Store owners play a part in the early decorating. They have tempted people with Christmas lights and decorations for weeks ahead . Sprucing up the outside of a home for the holidays gets into high gear after that. As the autumn scene becomes dreary and dry, it's time for colorful but wintery-looking arrangements by the door, on the balcony or on the patio. One decorator recommends red flower pots overflowing with evergreens and eucalyptus leaves with a glazed ball for color. Water fresh evergreens after placing them in the planter and add red berries. Winter pots must be made of heavy plastic, concrete or metal. For a decoration that will be enjoyed after the holidays, use live wreaths that extend over the rims of planters with pine cones in the center and dried branches reaching a foot or two above them.

Value Your Traditions
|
In any family, things change from one holiday to another. Traditions can be the same year after year. They give everyone a feeling of continuity and security.

Even Now, It's Possible to Build Customer Loyalty
Reluctant consumers, and companies who are buying less, may have small business owners scratching their heads about what to do next. Here's an idea: Take excellent care of the customers you have now. When economic conditions become more favorable, they will buy more from you than they do now. At the same time, getting into the habit of treating customers outstandingly will be a plus as new accounts come to you. Customer loyalty has taken a different form than in times past. Newly loyal customers need to like more than your name and your products. There's an old name for what they want: customer service. In retail, it is particularly important. As a consumer yourself, you know what we're talking about. Have you ever wondered if the item you want is worth the trouble of finding a sales associate to take your money? Or, do you want to buy a certain thing and can't find it. The department is deserted and so is the one next to it. In these cases, you won't have the customer experience because you won't become one. You'll give up and walk out. Superb customer service brings enormous benefits to an organization. An employee should be able to focus on the sale or solution to a problem without handing it off to someone else.

Are Hybrid Digital Cameras in Your Future?
So you've had your point-and-shoot digital camera for a year or two but want to do things it was not designed to do. You might covet a professional single lens reflex (SLR) but can't afford a price tag upwards of $500. In that case, the "hybrid" may be just the thing. Hybrids fall into an area between small point and shoot digitals and professional SLRs. They have higher sensitivities (ISO ratings), longer zoom lenses and are able to shoot at higher speeds to capture action, whether it be an auto race or the antics of a toddler. Manufacturers include Nikon, Canon, FujiFilm, Sony, Pentax, Samsung and Kodak. Depending on stores' weekly pricing, they may range from $200 to $500. They are distinguished by features like large-diameter zoom lenses ranging from 10X to 24X and larger LCD screens, some of which swivel for easy viewing of tough camera angles. Nearly all have some form of face detection to set the camera for the best possible focal length and exposure. While all are equipped with flash units, some have hot shoes for external flash, enabling bounce lighting. Burst modes, which allow for rapid sequences of single frames, are at higher rates in hybrids than in point-and-shoot digitals. All have video recording capabilities. Some are able to record high definition at a true 1080p. Some are powered by alkaline or nickel metal hydride AA batteries and others with lithium ion power cells. Those equipped with Super CCD cells (the camera's light sensors) are more costly to manufacture but offer a greater surface area to absorb more light. Hybrids are much larger than-point-and-shoot cameras and will not slip easily into the pocket or purse. However, if you have a need for speed or more professional-looking photos, you might want to weigh in on their features and benefits. Other tools you might need include a tripod, a video monitor and a microphone. Video is stored directly onto memory cards. The cameras have different limits for times. Comparisons can be made online by going to manufacturers' web sites or those offered by leading electronic and photographic store chains.
