Ask The Inspector
Question:We just had hardwood floors installed and were wondering if there is anything special we should do to clean and care for them? Answer:Proper care of your natural hardwood floor is critical to its life and lasting beauty. Here are some tips to help you care for your new floors. Shoe debris is one of the greatest enemies of your wood floors. Tiny dirt and sand particles from shoes act like sandpaper scratching and removing luster from your floors. Rugs or mats placed at entryways help attract debris from shoes - before they touch the wood. Also add to wet areas such as around sinks. Use mats/rugs designed for wood floor use - avoid rubber backed or rugs and mats that are not ventilated as they can damage the wood flooring also. Keep your floors free of dirt, sand and other gritty debris with a good quality broom or a soft mop such as terrycloth with a rotating head to get in tight areas such as under cabinets. A vacuum cleaner can also help with tough areas such as at joints or between planks. Make sure your vacuum doesn't have a brush or "beater" bar or that it is turned off before using. Tougher spills and stains may require specialized cleaning products which can remove grime without damaging the luster or surface of your floor. If your hardwoods are "pre-finished" then you may want to use the flooring manufacturers recommended products for cleaning and maintenance. Knowledgeable retailers should be able to recommend a product for your particular situation. After removing the heavier debris and grime, buffing can help restore the shine and luster of your hardwood floor. |
Fix It with Toothpaste?
Scratched CD: Sometimes a scratched, skipping CD can be repaired with toothpaste. Rub a small amount of a non-gel, baking soda toothpaste onto the visible CD scratches and then polish off. Rinse with water and let dry. Remove water marks on furniture: Rub some non-gel toothpaste on water rings from sweating drinks and then rub off with a damp cloth. Let the area dry and then add furniture polish. Polish: Using a non-gel type toothpaste, water and a soft cloth can shine silver, chrome, jewelry and even metal, bath and kitchen type fixtures. After cleaning, rinse well to remove any residue of film that may be present. Defogger: Toothpaste can actually help keep glass from fogging. Rub a small dab of toothpaste on glass items such as mirrors, windows, goggles, etc., and rinse. Deodorizer: Tough smell on hands? Wash with toothpaste. The deodorizing quality that works for your breath will help your hands smell great also!

Interior Electrical Outlets
Electrical outlets can be very dangerous resulting in fire or electrical shock. To test your electrical outlets, you'll need a three-prong electrical outlet tester. These look like three-prong plugs with three little lights. These can be found at most any hardware store for only $10 or $15. Go room by room through the entire house, checking as many electrical outlets as possible. Ideally, you want to check every outlet. Before touching any outlet, look to make sure that it is not physically damaged. Replace any outlet that is cracked or broken. With the rest of the outlets, take your electrical tester and plug it in. The most common fault is a condition called reversed polarity. Reversed polarity means that the black wire and the white wire are reversed where they are connected to the outlet. Appliances plugged into an outlet with reversed polarity will still work, but there is a much greater risk of electrocution.
