Restore Your Aluminum or
Vinyl Siding

Restore your siding? That's right! Oh - you thought
siding was forever and never needed any attention.
Well, if you own a home with older siding, you know
it just ain't so. Aluminum siding becomes dingy,
dirty, and faded with time. Vinyl siding becomes
dingy and dirty. Both types can become stained and
damaged. The good news is that you can restore
siding with a little effort and very little cost. You
can't remove those dings and scratches, but you
can restore the color and appearance.

Coming: A Really Thin TV

LED TV sets are making their way into stores around the world. They are about one inch thick and weigh up to 25 percent less than today's liquid-crystal-display (LCD) and plasma TVs.

Engineers say there may be a tradeoff between picture quality and the thinness of a set. Samsung, however, says the picture quality of its new (light-emitting diode) LED set is higher than LCDs of just a year or two ago. Samsung charges $2,199 for its new 46-inch LED TV.

LCD sets use a thin layer of liquid in front of slim fluorescent bulbs. The bulbs are much thicker than the diodes used in the new LEDs, which are about as flat as a computer chip.

Question:

We want to improve our attic insulation but don't know what kind or how much to use.  What do you think is best?

Answer:

What to use will depend on factors such as budget and what you have currently. Insulation is measured in R-values. The higher the R-value, the better, so the first step is to determine the type and thickness or R-value of the insulation you have now. The Dept. of Energy site www.ornl.gov/~roofs/zip/ziphome.html can help you determine what R-value you have and then what is recommended for your particular area and situation.

Insulation can be made from a variety of materials but it usually comes in four basic types:

Loose-fill insulation is loose fibers or fiber pellets usually made of rock wool, fiberglass, or cellulose and should be blown into spaces using pneumatic equip-ment.  It conforms well to building cavities and attics and has R-values ranging from R-2.2 - 3.5 per inch.

Rolls, batts or blankets are made from fibers, such as fiberglass and rock wool.  They are available in widths suited to standard spac

ings of wall studs and attic or floor joists and will provide an R-value of around 3.25 per inch.

Rigid foam insulation - foam insulation typically is more expensive than fiber insulation but is very effective where space limitations and higher R-values are needed.  Foam insulation R-values range from R-4 to R-6.5 per inch.

Foam-in-place insulation - this type can be blown into walls and attics and can reduce air leakage, if blown into cracks, such as around window and door frames.  It has R-values ranging from 4 - 6 depending on the type used.  While DIY kits are available for the foams, often professional installation is best.

Ceiling Fans for Your Porch or Patio
With extra breeze and refreshed air, fans can make a porch or patio a great place to be on a summer evening, but the type fan you install is critical to lasting performance.

Ceiling fans installed on a patio are often exposed to extreme humidity or changes in temperature and possibly even some amounts of rain, so drooping blades and worn and corroded metal parts are common sights for indoor type ceiling fans installed on a patio.

Patio ceiling fans should be made of materials such as plastics or resins that can take the moisture and humidity they'll be exposed to. Sometimes they are made with a special type of outside coating or of treated woods that resist rot and weathering. Many are made of metal, with a plastic or rubber coating to give them a longer life of service.

Make sure you check the application and ratings such as water and humidity for your prospective patio ceiling fan.  Also check that the surface and working components of the fan are designed to be protected from the elements.

Stealing from a store
This is supposedly a true story, it happened in a small town of the province of Quebec, Canada, in October 1996. They showed the video surveillance tape on the news, and even the anchorman was laughing through it.

A robber came into a convenience store wearing a ski mask and a gun wanting to empty the cash register. He took the clerk to the backstore and locked her up in the fridge. Unfortunately, when he came back to the front of the store, a customer had come in. So he took *off* the ski mask and the gloves, and pretended to be filling in for the clerk. The customer wanted a lottery ticket, so he tried to help her out, by pressing a whole bunch of buttons on the machine (thus leaving fingerprints everywhere), but the machine was not cooperating.

Meanwhile, another customer walks in. Finally, he tells the first customer (after about 5 minutes of close-up shots from the camera) that the machine is not working and that he won't be able to help her. The robber *makes the sale* to the second customer and he leaves as well.

The robber then puts back on his gloves to take the money (after touching just about everything in sight *without* gloves), and hides his face with the palm of his hands as he is leaving. This scene lasted well over 10 minutes, during which, you see and hear the robber as well as in a movie.

The day after excerpts of the tape were aired, the phones at the police station were ringing off the hook. Apparently, even though no reward had been offered, people thought he was too stupid to deserve anything else!

He had to turn himself in that same day.
