Creating opportunities for all to thrive

         e-Touch                                                                      January 2012

 Greetings!

Poverty by Webster's definition is "the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions."

But poverty is often understood differently in an affluent culture. One conjures up hardscrabble inner  city poor, people locked in generational poverty, or the poor we see in global settings .

Hardly ever do we attach the word poverty to the suffering of friends and neighbors in our midst. It's too uncomfortable a thought, a word. Hard to believe or somehow inapplicable.

But poverty by any definition is definitely here. In the burbs. A trend mirrored in suburbs across the nation, where a recent study found that suburban poverty has grown 5 times faster than it has in big cities.

On Monday, Feb. 27, IOCP, Episcopal Community Services, and local communities of faith will host

a community meal and conversation on poverty in our midst at IOCP, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Our chance to become informed, involved, and invested in changing what needs to change. Limited seating available. Please RSVP to Cate Fossing.

MN FoodShare
Donation Creation is a fun, creative way to participate in the MN FoodShare March Campaign. Businesses, schools, churches, and other groups are invited to organize a food drive and create a sculpture of the donated items.

Mosaic logoFor each pound of donated food, Mosaic Foundation will donate $1 to our food shelf up to $20,000.

The March Campaign is the largest annual food and fund drive in the state. It's the only time of year contributions to food shelves leverage additional dollars. Our goal this year is to collect 60,000 lbs. of food and $60,000.

In My Words
"At IOCP's old location, I spent about $200 a month on food for my family in addition to what I received from the food shelf there," said Reisa. "In the food shelf at IOCP's new location, I can choose the food my family needs, so I now spend $120-$150 on food. This has made a big impact on my monthly budget."
