April 2011
This community continues to amaze. In an economy that is still sputtering, a housing market that is still lagging, and when virtually everyone has been impacted in some way, you continue to step up.

For our March food drive, we set a lofty goal: 50,000 lbs. of food and $50,000 to purchase food. Lofty because last year we collected 37,650.6 lbs. and $29,732.96 during the same period.

Your response? Even loftier. Thanks to your generosity and the many families, churches, schools, and groups that participated, you contributed a record 53,316.85 lbs. and $55,739.63! That's awesome. You're awesome.

On behalf of the 4,000 families in our community who rely on supplemental food, thank you!

Businesses Focus on Early Learning

CfKI Breakfast May 4, 7:15-8:30 a.m.

Join leaders from Minnesota's business and education communities for the 5th annual Caring for Kids Initiative Breakfast, where the focus will be on improving school readiness.

Mark Scally, MnBEL president

"Our economy depends on an educated workforce," said Mark Scally, president of the Minnesota Business for Early Learning and keynote speaker for the event.

Children from families living in poverty--15% of those entering Wayzata schools--are twice as likely to be unprepared for kindergarten. Studies show that kids who aren't ready for school don't catch up. Last year, CfKI provided 120 early care and education scholarships. Still, an additional 465 preschoolers would benefit from CfKI assistance.

"Our scholarships are the best investment this community can make in its future workforce," said CfKI Director Brenda Heim. A full-time scholarship costs between $10,000 and $14,000 a year.

The complimentary breakfast will be held at the Wayzata Country Club. Registration required by May 2. Contact Cate Fossing.
