No matter a recession. We and our community partners are committed to staying on mission. If anything, now more than ever.

At IOCP we've girded ourselves for the challenge, trimmed an already lean budget of $200,000, frozen salaries, and are pursuing new and old funding sources with a passion. What we simply can't afford to do is become discouraged worshippers of a crisis. Not now. Not when families and kids of our community need us more than ever.

Picasso had the right idea. Reflecting on what to do in hard times, he said, "When you run out of red, use blue." You just create new ways of doing what's important. You don't cave.

On April 30, we celebrated with partners, volunteers, donors, friends the power of a community that has discovered what it cares about. This community. We celebrated how far we've come together over the past 30 years.

To ensure a safe place to call home for every family, a strong start in life for every child, educational opportunity for every youth, a chance for every breadwinner to make a living, a way for every senior to live in dignity, a welcome to a new home for every immigrant, health and healing for the most vulnerable in our midst, and the shelter of each other in the storms of life.

Together is the operative word in all this. It does take the whole village. And what a village we've become!

Stay with us, friends, hard times notwithstanding, as we create a new and hopeful future for the people God has placed in our path.

Grotto Foundation CfKI grantFunding critical for
CfKI to reach its goal

The Caring for Kids Initiative's goal this year is to raise $250,000 for its scholarship program.

The Grotto Foundation
(Foundation Executive Director Ellis F. Bullock, left, with CfKI Advisory Board Co-chair Brenda Heim and CfKI Director Nancy Johnson) has awarded CfKI $25,000 to support the scholarship program. The CfKI breakfast, held April 23, raised nearly $30,000 for the program.

Minnesota FoodShare boosts inventory
At a critical time for food shelves, this community stepped up. Total food and in-kind donations for the March Minnesota FoodShare drive were 39,700 lbs. of food and $23,960. Thank you for your generous response!

We're especially proud of two of our own--Charlie Cook and Greg Dubay--who were named Outstanding Food Shelf Volunteers by Minnesota FoodShare for 2009.
