Transitions Research Corner: Easter Seals Living With Autism Study Autism
affects more than 1.5 million Americans and their families. Critical services
and supports are needed to raise a child with autism, but they are few and far
between.
Easter Seals
surveyed over 2,500 parents of children with autism and typically-developing
children -- about daily life, relationships, independence, education, housing,
employment, finances and healthcare.
The
results gathered from this study paint a
startling picture of the life-long fears and anxieties people with autism and
their families face ... and the disparities among parents of children with
autism as compared to parents of typically developing children:
Nearly 80% are extremely or very concerned about
their child's independence as an adult.
Only 14% feel that their child will be able to
make life decisions.
Only 17% think their child will make friends.
They report that they're "financially drowning,"
with concerns for their child's financial future.

The California Zephyr: Train Ride to Reno with Hunter
My godson, Hunter, has always been fascinated with trains. Over the
years he responded with great enthusiasm as he was often given videos,
games, and books that focused on that subject. One of his favorite
activities for a long time was starting, stopping, rewinding, and then
replaying a video of a train going through tunnels. I can still hear
his sounds of his enjoyment.
As he grew older, he was taken on short train rides and responded
with excitement at the start of the trip but then would fall asleep as
the movement and sounds seemed to calm and comfort him.

California DDS - Summary of Budget Cuts July 2009
The State of California is experiencing an unprecedented budget shortfall largely due to the severe national economic crisis. Every area of state government is impacted by this fiscal crisis, including the Department of Developmental Services (DDS or Department).
In February, the Governor and Legislature reached agreement on a budget solution to address a $42 billion budget deficit and restore California's fiscal balance. Unfortunately, since that time the global recession has deepened and the State now faces an additional deficit exceeding $26 billion.
