Dr. Shattuck is a national expert on disabilities, specifically autism. He has published a number of articles on the prevalence and course of autism as well as on policies and services for people with autism and their families. The Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders recently published his article on how autism symptoms can improve with age.  We interviewed him about this study for our Research Spotlight.

Your friends can also send you a beautiful, personalized greeting card, which includes a picture and description of your gift, right from the site.  To select the Coryell Autism Center as a beneficiary of your gift, simple type our name in the non-profit search box.   The Coryell Autism Center was recently the beneficiary of donations in honor of the wedding of Kirby and Debbie Coryell.  This type of generoristy is creating opportunities for young adults with adults and we are so grateful. If you are interested in making the Coryell Autism Center a beneficiary of your special day or event, please contact us here.

Join Us at the San Jose Giants Disability Awareness Night July 18th

giants groupWhen children or adults have special needs, their parents or caregivers can have special fears about their future care, finances, happiness and independence.

But families in the Bay Area will take a break from that anxiety during a trip to San Jose Municipal Stadium to see the San Jose Giants take on the Modesto Nuts. The San Jose Giants, EP Global Communications and MassMutual Financial Group are making this Saturday, July 18th, 6 p.m. at the park possible by donating tickets to the game.

"This is much more than a trip to the ballpark. It's a loud and clear statement that people with disabilities are an important part of our community," said Nick Homer, Special Care Planner, at Miceli Financial Partners a general agency of MassMutual.

by Nancy Shute from U.S. News and World Reports

usn logoJoe Steffy is off to Overland Park, Kan., this week to do a PowerPoint presentation on his business, Poppin' Joe's Kettle Korn. He's a 23-year-old small-business man with a goal of $100,000 in sales by 2012. Joe also has autism and Down syndrome and is nonverbal. When he gives his talk, he will push buttons on an augmentative speech device to deliver the words. His audience will be parents who fervently hope their own special-needs children will be able to work, too.  Read more.
