Greetings!

Regular readers of my newsletters know that I am a cheerleader for paying attention to Baby Boomers. And with good reason: They remain the richest, largest segment of our population. If you ignore them, you could be leaving a lot of money on the table.
When credit is due other generations, however, it must be noted.
Am I in charge yet?
Gen Y Guy
New research reveals that
, for the first time in recent history, an economic recovery will NOT be led by hard-working and consuming Baby Boomers, but instead by the generations that follow them.

"In the past two recessions, Baby Boomers quickly led the recovery. However, this group has been hit hard by the recession at a point in life when their financial commitments loom large and retirement is on the horizon. Marketers will need to look to the smaller Gen X generation and large Gen Y population to fuel growth in the initial stages of the post-recession recovery," said a reviewer.
Put another way, having taken a big hit in retirement savings and having less time to recover, Baby Boomers will be buckled down rebuilding wealth for a longer period than Gen X or Y.
The survey report supports this view:
  • Among Gen Y consumers (those between 18 and 27 for this report) just 25% say the economy has significantly changed their spending behavior
  • 36% of Gen Xers say it has
  • 37% of Boomers say it has
A changing of the generational guard? This recession may have been the first step in that direction. Your marketing planning should evolve with it! Get a copy of the report here.
Sarah Palin to Sell Alaska
Alaska sceneForget politics. Sarah Palin is now famous for being famous. This makes her a marketable commodity, at least in certain venues. The TLC cable channel has signed on to test that hypothesis by having her star in a travelogue series about her home state. Given the coverage already received for the announcement, and the likely buzz when the "Sarah Palin's Alaska" debuts, it is probably a good move. Some critics are already sniping, but that is all to the good for publicity, is it not? As long as TLC keeps politics out of the script (if not out of the minds of viewers), this project will probably work out.
The Census? Get Serious!

Who will win the count?

The Annual U.S. Census may seem unimportant to the average citizen, but it is a life-and-death event for Congresspeople, state and local governments and marketers.

Where else can I get so much free information to inform (note that these words share a root) the planning I do with clients. And the more accurate it is, the better the data.
