So, is the green trend over?

About a month ago, the Vancouver Sun featured some of the more eco-friendly toy and gift options we carry, resulting in new customers and several other media outlets contacting us.

A radio station in the valley arranged an interview with us about greener gift giving.   Notes in hand, my partner Meg called in for the on-air interview.  After some brief introductions, the interviewer popped the question out "So, isn't green so over by now?  We've been hearing about going green for some time now, so isn't the trend done now?"   (read the entire blog)

 A New Year Two

Hi

Who doesn't view the new year as a chance to start fresh?
Here at Every Little Bit, we are always trying to challenge ourselves with new ways to live greener.

In the article below, we've highlighted 11 great ways to impact the earth in 2011, and we plan on trying a few immediately.  There is always a little something new to try in making a difference for our planet and our lives.  We think fresh herbs on the windowsill sounds like bliss, even without a green thumb.

As well, we've started scouring the world for new products and ideas to help make our lives even more sustainable.  We are looking forward to a great year of green at Every Little Bit.  Stayed tuned for new arrivals!

And of course, in December we turned two and we still need to celebrate which means great savings for you!

Happy New Year!

11 ways to impact the earth (and yourself) in 2011

1. Welcome natural light: You might be surprised at how it brightens your mood.

2. Pick seasonal and local fruits and vegetables: Not only is this better for the environment, you'll also rediscover the pleasure of meals changing with the seasons.

3. Start composting: Municipal composting is becoming increasingly popular.  If you don't have municipal composting yet then you can make your own compost, it is not difficult if you follow some simple DIY instructions for creating one.

4. Plant a sapling and herbs: If you don't have a garden, start with potted plants. You can grow your own organic herbs in old containers and place them on the kitchen window sill.

5. Walk or take public transport: If you don't have a long distance to commute, walk or cycle down. If that is not practical, use public transport at least one day a week.

6. Gift your loved ones with green gifts: Try to think different and give green gifts. Use your creativity and wrap the gifts in a unique and eco-friendly way.

7. Keep your electronics for the year: Our consumption of electronics is reaching records. Make a break, and promise not to buy new electronics this year, unless the one you already have breaks down (and when it does, ensure it is recycled properly!).

8.  Start harvesting rain water: Harvested rain water can be used for many purposes: cloth washing, cleaning the house and the car, garden watering, toilet flushing and more.

9. Don't eat meat at least one day a week: According to a report by the Food & Agricultural Organization of the UN, livestock production is one of the major causes of the world's most pressing environmental problems, including global warming, land degradation, air and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.

10. Bond with nature: Take a calm and quiet walk in a nearby park, at least once a week.

11. Spread green awareness: Talk about the need to turn green with your kids, family members, friends and colleagues.
