If you have kids, make a special day of  spreading cheer to the great outdoors. 

• Decorate outside with edible ornaments for the birds, squirrels, rabbits, etc..
• Plant a tree to "offset" the one you may be decorating indoors.
• Go on a bird count; even the little ones can participate in this activity.
• Spend 20 minutes outside on the special days of the holiday. Studies show that people have more meaningful conversations when outside!
