The World Wildlife Fund created Earth Hour to help people who are concerned about the planet and want to show support for action on climate change.

Earth Hour is symbolic. Turning off lights for an hour won't stop climate change but it does demonstrate that individual action is important and adds up to make a big difference. It also sends a unified message to government and world leaders that people want regulations established to achieve meaningful emission reduction to help fight climate change.
 
Everyone can participate in Earth Hour! And it's as simple as flicking off a switch - literally. You can participate by yourself or with family, friends and just a few candles or flashlights.
 
So...what can you do in the dark for an hour?
  • Get your kids to sleep and then....

Okay, failing that, try one of these:

  • Hide all the stuffed animals around the house & have a scavenger hunt in the dark
  • Play the Game of Life to candles (Thanks to Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore)
  • Tell ghost stories while creating scary faces with your flashlights.
  • Create an under-the-covers reading club
  • Put small objects in a bag & have people guess what they are (nothing sharp please)
