Bamboo is a totally renewable resource.  Many bamboo species  can grow 2 feet or more per day. Once harvested, bamboo does not need to be replanted, because a new shoot will grow from its extensive root system. So bamboo (a grass) renews itself readily, unlike hardwood trees, which, once cut, are gone forever.

Join us at the Family Fair - March 1st

Hi

We want to invite you to the 3rd Annual Family Fair on Sunday March 1st, 9.30am - 4pm at the Executive Plaza Hotel on North Road in Coquitlam.  We're going to be at Table #1 and hope you can stop by to visit.

From wooden toys and cloth diapers for junior to travel mugs for mom and wind-up flashlights for dad, we'll have a wide selection of family-friendly eco-products for you to take home.

If you haven't attended before, the Family Fair is a tradeshow style event with live entertainment and a lot of family-friendly activities going on - basically  something for everyone in the family. This event helps connect families with the great number of fantastic products, services and organizations that exist here in the Tri-Cities and surrounding area.

The main stage entertainment includes performances from Bobs & Lolo (who just debuted on TreehouseTV) and Magician Dennis Hewson.  There is a play area, stroller parking, diaper change and nursing area, gift bags, door prizes and more.

Tickets are available at the door for $3.  The under-twelve crowd is free.

Hope to see you there,

March Madness or Spring Cleaning?
For me, March has long meant camping in front of the TV watching college basketball - a task much easier before kids, but certainly more attainable now that I'm teaching them how to bet.

But it recently came to my attention, that for others, March meant spring cleaning!  And so, while I can't legally recommend which team will challenge North Carolina, I can provide some recommendations on "greener" cleaning.

There's alot of toxic chemicals out there in our day-to-day cleaning products.  Here's a few of the big ones to avoid:
  • Ammonia - present in alot of glass cleaners, it is irritating to the respiratory & digestive tracts, as well as the eyes and skin.
  • Chlorine bleach - present in many laundry whiteners, mold removers and scouring powders, exposure can contribute to asthma, other respiratory problems and skin irritation.
  • Phthalates - while mainly used as a substance to to increase the flexibility of plastic, they are often found in household detergents and fabric softeners.  Numerous studies have indicated cancer linkages and reproductive damage in rodents.
Chances are, you've got alot of the ingredients (like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, olive oil) around your house to make your own non-toxic cleaners.  Check out Green Living Ideas for some basic recipes.

But if you'd prefer to catch some great NCAA action instead of concocting cleaners, then check out the great selection of environmentally-friendly cleaning products at Every Little Bit to make your house squeaky green.

We carry Canada's own Nature Clean brand and my personal favorite line of cleaners - Ecover, as well as the E-cloth, where you don't have to use anything but water.
