Dear Systems Thinker,I am in "the City" this week the name locals refer to NYC. Today I am prepping for my Tuesday presentation. My submitted white paper is called "Managing Service Organizations as Systems." I'll give some background on my "Deming journey" and then cover the Vanguard model for "check" and how using it can help gain knowledge and change thinking. My plan is to weave stories (both good and bad) into my presentation.
The 17th Annual International Deming Research Seminar
In this past month I have traveled to both the UK and India. In India, I got to see the huge buildings in Whitefield outside Bangalore (Bengaluru) where many American companies have outsourced their IT directly or through companies like HP.
India is a poor nation and labor is inexpensive, but I still wonder how much outsourcing would be needed if a better design of work were present. The functional separation of the work inhibits the flow of communication and the cost of contracts, travel, busing people to locations, monitoring, etc. certainly makes you wonder if companies are saving money. Especially, I learned that if you are in India staying too long (two years) in one position is not a good stigma.
Regardless, knowledge is only gained with the work with better thinking.
Many of you did not get the video I referenced last month - my apologies. Here is the link to the video:

I am planning another seminar for late summer early fall, probably in Orlando. Stay tuned for information in the May newsletter. I plan to only do one public seminar this year.
