International service organizations have said working with the Vanguard Method has been the most important change in thinking they have experienced in their working lives.  Come join us!
Dear Systems Thinker,

I had over 200 requests for the PDF on Lean vs. Systems Thinking spreadsheet that I offered in my last newsletter.  This spreadsheet was not built by me, but by former lean practitioners that adopted the Vanguard Method.

I participated in a debate sponsored by IQPC with Deb Sarkar who has written columns and books about Lean in service.  It was probably more a "dialogue of the deaf" as Lean folks can't see, hear or understand the differences until they engage in the Vanguard Method.

You can listen to the "great debate" - it does require that you sign up for the Process Excellence Network (formerly sixsigmaIQ).  Heads-Up: You will need to sign-up to listen.

The Great Debate: Lean for Services

You wouldn't think of this method unless you started from a different point as John Seddon did.  Conventional thinking becomes obsolete.  Some say the method is common sense, if it were, then more would be doing systems thinking instead of continuing to create the sub-optimized and wasteful monoliths that business and government have built and continue to build.

Along this line, I am preparing a paper, abstract and presentation for the International Deming Conference in New York on March 21 and 22.  Learn more about the conference:

From Tools (and Fools) to

Systems Thinking

The tools approach (whether lean, six sigma or anything else) is rooted in copying.  I have warned against the tools used in lean because they do not transfer very well to service (different problems).  But further, they stifle learning and innovation by limitations of the tool itself.  If we are looking for the 7 wastes . . . are we missing others?  What new tools have we developed for service with this thinking?

I use SPC to help me know whether things are getting better or not when action is taken on the system.  I know who invented the tool - Walter Shewhart - and he used it to help understand his system.  The use of SPC in service is applicable if you know what you are doing and how to understand the data.  The important piece is I understand the tool, who invented it, what problems Shewhart was trying to solve and the problems I am trying to solve with it.
