International service organizations have said working with the Vanguard Method has been the most important change in thinking they have experienced in their working lives.  Come join us!
Dear Systems Thinker,

I just spent two days conducting my first seminar and workshop in the United States.  A whole new group of people now understand why lean manufacturing tools are not for service industry.  The toolheads have it all wrong (and so do the techeads for that matter).

Participants got a history of work through the eyes of a systems thinker.  Deming, Ohno, Ackoff and John Seddon were all covered with a full day covering the Vanguard Method.  They learned why systems were designed the way they are and how to begin to perform check in their service organization to initiate change.

Participants were from government (federal and state), manufacturing (service side), call centers, engineering, sales, operations, health care and many other industries and disciplines.

They all learned a better way to make the work work.

From Tools (and Fools) to Thinking

Undercover Boss winds up uncovering fools.  My recent article on GCI Commerce and their CEO Michael Rubin made customermanagementIQ after it was originally on my blog.  Danielle who received a beatdown on the show by Rubin commented on my original post.

A Black Belt at GCI has connected to me on LinkedIn.  Unfortunately, Six Sigma won't help much in the change in thinking that management needs.

It's the system, stupid!

Another post I wrote was about the dramatic change in method that happens with the Vanguard Method.  I compared it to Dick Fosbury's "Flop" method.  Very popular amongst readers.

I wrote an article on forced ranking and why it is bad.  This follows my original post at HumanresourcesIQ some months ago.  W. Edwards Deming warned us against ranking people and the consequences of these actions.

Government - Republicans and Democrats Don't Get It

I am not the only one saying this.  I read an article in USA Today (Frustrated Voters Cut Ties with Republicans, Democrats) that revealed more voters are becoming independent.  Count me among them.

For me, neither party can reign in the spending in government.  Pork spending is certainly a contributor, but no one seems to know how to provision services effectively.  Republicans want privatization and outsourcing of government.  Democrats seem to want more services in government.

The problem with either approach is that all efforts thus far are to cut costs.  To focus on costs . . . is to increase them . . . ALWAYS!  When public and private sector finally understands that costs are in flow, we may actually be able to provision services effectively.

We continue to go down the shared services path to save money.  We already know that this increases costs, unless we first study demand.

An article I wrote based off of John Seddon's challenge to Conservatives that to outsource the back offices is a bad approach.  Did we study demand?  Do we even need the back offices?

It is this type of ignorance that continues to build our deficit and adds to our inability to compete.
