Dear Systems Thinker,
Very active here in February. You will start to see content both free and for sale to help you learn more or get started in systems thinking.
This will be the last month for the free download "Understanding Your Organization as a System." Please download before March 1, 2010.
I also will be conducting a workshop/seminar in Indianapolis April 19-20. This will be a workshop to learn before we take it to North America. We will be promoting this seminar locally on a limited basis and to newsletter subscribers.

| The No Tool Zone (Update) |
The new blog site on WordPress launched February 1. We are experiencing some problems with the RSS feed and I am hoping to have this problem resolved by Brandswag (my blog vendor) this week.
I will be adding systems thinking documents for sale from the blog site and also sign-up for seminars and workshops.

| From Tools and Fools to Thinking |
|
The Lean toolheads are advocating 5S, standardization and other tools for the healthcare industry. These efforts may get some results, but they are limiting the change of thinking required to achieve deep and sustainable improvement.
I wrote a post about Deliverology showing up in the US government and education systems that has garnered a lot of attention, especially in California. A bad idea that stems from the Tony Blair administration in the UK this has been a proven loser.

| New Intervention in the US |
|
I began work this week with a HVAC company here in the US. The first week is always intense as we kick off the intervention. US organizations are especially difficult as the Tayloristic mindset we all have grown up with gets challenged.
The Vanguard Method is extremely effective in getting management to rethink how they view the design and management of work. This is not just a front-line activity and the largest changes ocurr with management. This past week was no different than any other intervention and there will be challenges ahead.
Comments that we got this week were:
- "Everything I have ever learned in my business school just got challenged."
- "This is a completely different way of working than all the service businesses that I have worked for."
- "WOW!"
The next few weeks will be critical as a small team looks at their organization with a completely different mindset. I am as excited for them as they are for the company. The lightbulbs are going off in unison as worker and management alike discover a better way to design and manage work.
Personally, two decades of TQM, Lean, Six Sigma can not step on the same field as what I have experienced with the Vanguard Method.
