Can Your Boxer Ring a Bell? By Ann Callan
Want a fun, practical way to teach your dog to let you know when they need to potty? It's easy. Teach your dog to ring a bell at the back door. First, purchase either a bell that can be rung by tapping it or a bell that hangs from your door knob. I prefer the bell you tap, like the kind you find in the doctor's office. You can order this from 1800PetMeds.com. Next, choose a word that means "potty" to your dog. I use "outside". Say to your dog "outside" and when your dog comes to the back door, take their paw and tap the bell. If using a hanging bell, gently push their nose into the bell until it rings. Then give your dog a small treat. Repeat ringing the bell several more times and then take your dog outside to potty. Reward your dog again when they potty. Follow this same procedure every time your dog needs to go outside to potty. Before you know it, your dog will be be ringing the bell on their own to communicate when they "have to go". |

BECOME A VIRTUAL FOSTER Thinking about fostering but can't actually take a dog in your home? LSBR now has a way to Virtual Foster a dog already in our program or one which needs rescue from a shelter. Many of you may follow us on FACEBOOK, but if not click our Virtual Foster Program to learn more about how you can foster a dog and save a life. Here is one example of a Virtual Foster, Captain Jack, who was rescued by a caring boxer lover, Chris B. She can't have another dog but wants to help LSBR save lives. Now Captain Jack is happy and ADOPTED in his new home with a wonderful family.
