Mr. Joseph Monte shares a letter to the editor of the Washington Post, published on April 13, 2012 concerning the increasingly serious problem of bullying:
To the Editor: "Bully," the powerful documentary opening in the Washington area this weekend, vividly addresses through real-life stories a community problem that will require a community solution. Educators, guidance counselors, social workers, parents, students and others must work together, face up to the difficult truth that bullying exists and is damaging, and commit to changing the reality and the culture. Public schools should be precious sanctuaries for students to be free from harassment. That proposition can become the norm if public schools are fully staffed, given adequate resources, and respected. In times of financial stress, public schools themselves experience a public group bullying. Public school budgets have become targets of vigilantes looking for dragons to slay. For over 50 years in the public schools, I have counseled students who have suffered from bullying. I have brought students together, families together, seen the rise and dangers of Facebook bullying cases, and tried to be a peacemaker throughout. Time, personnel, and a disposition to change the culture can lay the groundwork to eradicate bullying in our public schools, on school buses and in our society.
