What is a Karma Yoga Class?

A Karma Yoga class is a yoga class "by donation only" with the funds going to support a local charity. It is a class that allows us both as yoga practitioners and teachers to give back to our community.

A special reduced drop-in price of $5.00 minimum (or as per your donation) encourages us to come out and support a wonderful cause, get to know our fellow yogis at Bikram West Edmonton, and have some fun in practicing yoga to support others... This is what yoga is all about!!!

Good Luck Mary Angus! Le Tour of Hope - Kids with Cancer Ride...

The April "Karma Class", being held Saturday April 25th at 9:15 a.m., is to help raise funds for "Le Tour of Hope".  This event is a "mega-bike-ride" from Montana to Edmonton to raise money for the "Kids with Cancer" Foundation. This ride will take place from June 21st (summer solstice) through June 28th, 2009. There are 30 riders in total, each pedaling their hearts (and legs!) out to help support this very worthy cause.

Mary Angus, one of our dedicated Bikram Yoga West Edmonton practitioners, will be splitting this giant ride with a friend of hers, each riding 4 full days in support of "Kids with Cancer". Each day will consist of approximately 120 km on the road! After this giant feat and work on the quadriceps (thigh muscles), "Fixed Firm Pose" just might be a little uncomfortable for a while.... (Sorry Mary!) ... Stretch out those bike riding muscles!!

For more detailed information on "Le Tour of Hope", please link to the following website
www.kidswithcancer.ca

Lets come out to support Mary and "Le Tour of Hope", enjoy a wonderful yoga practice, and have a bite to eat after the class.

If you are unable to attend this class and would like to donate to Mary's bike ride, please ask at the front desk as we would be more than happy to provide you with Mary's contact details!

Bikram Yoga West Edmonton - "Featured Student"

Bikram Yoga West Edmonton is very excited to present to you our first "Featured Student". Yoga is about personal growth, community growth, and relationships. It is a huge commitment  to come to yoga and put in all of the dedicated hard work that we all do. Although we see  and feel all of the amazing benefits at the studio everyday, it is nice to take  some extra time to share in the growth, dedication and hard work of yogis !

Our "Featured Student" for April is Becky Lyon... Congratulations and thanks so much for your dedicated yoga practice and amazing outlook... You add so much to the studio!  This is Becky's story...

LogoI have been attending Bikram Yoga West Edmonton since August 2008.  I am continuously BLOWN away by the results of a 3-5X a week practice.  I can feel the transformation happening from the inside out.    I have shed 20 pounds.   I feel SO much better.

I had done Bikram Yoga sporadically for a few years before getting into a regular practice and can still remember how difficult it was at the beginning to be in the heat.  I had paid $20 to try it for a week and I remember having to do three classes to commit to going again.    I remember thinking "Why am I doing this to myself?  I just want to get out of here.  It's way too hot in here."  But there is something magic about how you feel after a few Bikram Yoga classes.   I remember going back every day for six weeks because of how I felt.  I just felt so HAPPY from the inside out.  Nothing had changed on the outside, it was the inside.   Now years later having had the experience of eight solid months of Bikram Yoga ... amazing.  It is like science how it heals you.

I still have those days where it is all I can do to just stay in the room and breathe and other days when I feel like I got my ass kicked and other days where I can enjoy the ability to get deeper into poses and get through a whole class with ease.  My experience with the yoga is it teaches you about life.  There is no easy fix.  As Bikram says, "The hard way is the right way".  Bikram's Yoga is so working for me and I'm getting results I never dreamed possible.  When I started at BYWE in August I was continually having to take Super Strength Ibuprofen for pain just to get through "a day at the office" sitting in a forward bend (at a computer).    I was in so much discomfort and fear because I was having pain in my stomach which I was hoping was radiating from muscles in my back and fearing it was something more serious than that.   As I got back into the hot room, I instantly started to feel relief from the pain and I was right about it being muscles as I could feel it working its way out especially in triangle.  I am so grateful for Bikram Yoga and BYWE.   What a fantastic space and place to practice Bikram Yoga.

Yoga - Playing a role to reduce the risk factors of cancer...

Please take time to link to the site below  to read a very informative article by Dr. Joel Brame regarding the role that Bikram Yoga can play in "reducing risk factors of cancer". This article highlights 5 extremely valuable benefits of your Bikram Practice in over-all disease prevention and wellness maintenance, which includes the following...

  • Reduces acidity in the body
  • Re-Oxygenates the Body
  • Detoxification
  • Bolsters the Immune System
  • Reconnects the Mind with the Body
PLEASE NOTE: "This article is in no way intended to replace professional medical advice... Medical research shows that practicing yoga can play a positive role in supporting recovery from cancer. Little research is available on yoga's role in prevention... This article's purpose is to bring light to the possibilities of prevention through Bikram (or heated) yoga" (Brame, Joel; 2008)

Feature Posture - Dadayamana-Janushirasana

What does Dandayamana-Janushirasana mean? Posture 5

In Sanskrit, it means Standing Head to Knee..

You may be familiar with this posture number 4! "LOCK THE KNEE!" This posture tightens your abdominal and thigh muscles, improves flexibility of the sciatic nerves.

In addition, it works the muscles of the back, the biceps and the triceps. When you touch the forehead to your knee, you create a front-side compression; squeezing and flushing out the internal abdominal organs such as the gall bladder, pancreas and spleen, as well as the uterus and ovaries.

*The most important component of this posture is to move step- by-step, building the correct and complete form. Standing Head to Knee is a diagnostic tool that reveals your level of focus and determination. Find your inner bulldog and feed your Bengal tiger!
