March 22nd is "World Water Day".
Let's be grateful for the clean water that we have to drink and help those that do not have the same.

Water

Our Bikram Yoga practice reminds us of the great importance of drinking water for our health and wellness. "International Water Day" is held annually on March 22nd as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources for the world population.

March's Featured Instructor - Damian Kosabeck

Damian

In 2005 I found Bikram Yoga and started practicing twice a week.  After very few classes, I began to feel... something.  I couldn't explain it other than an almost imperceptible feeling of change.  The benefits from the yoga were overflowing into my day to day life.  I was calmer, stronger physically & mentally, and I could feel more balance permeating my being. My practice quickly increased to 4 and 5 times a week and with that, my progress accelerated.  I was continually finding ways to challenge myself and was being challenged in different ways with each class.  I wanted to share the yoga more and more; there were  so many people I could see that could be, would be & needed to be helped by the yoga.  A thought... teacher training... came to me.  Soon, becoming a teacher seemed like a natural step, an evolution to deepening my understanding of the yoga and a way to share beyond my enthusiasm. I went to Teacher Training in the Fall of 2008 and began teaching soon after.  Through teaching, I hope to bring a sense of openness, acceptance and community that has kept me with Bikram Yoga.  I want people to feel the same wonder that I still feel growing inside me. You will change, you will be better; there is a more authentic you.  Do your yoga, do it often.

Hydration ... Are you drinking enough water?

Drink 8 or more glasses (8 oz. / 250 ml) of water for normal activity or half your body weight in oz. Drinking more during the summer or if you spend time outdoors is important.

At least 2 hours prior to class drink 16 oz. / 500 ml of water. Stay away from fluids containing alcohol, caffeine or lots of sugar, as these tend to be dehydrating.

Take a water bottle into class with you and take small drinks between postures. Be conservative with your water breaks; sometimes drinking water can become a habitual distraction.

Re-hydrate after class with an additional 32 oz. / 1liter of water. You may want to consider taking an electrolyte supplement to replace trace minerals, ideal for sports performance, people working in high temperatures and anyone experiencing high levels of fluid loss. Please ask us if you have any questions regarding electrolytes.

Refrain from wiping the sweat off your skin. If the sweat is removed from the skin, evaporation will not occur, and heat will be retained... Sweating is a natural and healthy reaction to the heat and exercise.

Try to minimize caffeinated and/or alcoholic beverages since they increase fluid loss and cause dehydration. In addition to your normal water intake, drink an equal amount of water to every glass of alcohol or caffeinated beverage.

This is a general guideline, you must find out for yourself what works best for you, but realize that most of us do NOT drink enough water... So drink up and be healthy!!
