Well Folks, it's a big week in Beacon.
We have a great talk today at Dia:Beacon, more music than you could shake a TIKI at, and the Beacon Arts Awards on Thursday, June 3 supporting the Clara Lou Gould Fund for the Arts, and you can read below a great column in the Poughkeepsie Journal requesting info from all who love Beacon.
And there's even more extra special goodness next week!

PoJo: What Makes You Passionate About Beacon? |

Beacon Can Claim A Lively Arts Scene John W. Barry ˇ May 27, 2010
Of all the thousands of e-mails I have received while music writer at the Journal, I will never forget the one I got after writing a story about folk singer Pete Seeger years ago.
Most people, like the gentleman who wrote this e-mail, believed Seeger lived in Beacon. But during an interview I conducted with Seeger, I asked him where he lived, just to triple-check my facts, as I often do while working on a story.
Seeger told me he actually lives in Dutchess Junction, in the Town of Fishkill. So I identified Seeger as a Dutchess Junction resident and received several e-mails telling me I was wrong.
But the one that stood out was from this guy who said he knew Seeger lives in Beacon because he moved to Beacon many years earlier, precisely because Seeger lived there.
Now that's dedication, and passion . And that's just the kind of passion I have come across, time and time again in Beacon, particularly when it comes to the arts.
Just consider the lively arts scene in Beacon, that fosters this passion:
BACA - the Beacon Arts Community Association - is very active in promoting the local arts scene. According to its website, www.beaconarts.org , BACA is an organization whose members include artists, galleries, specialty shops, antique stores, restaurants, services and supporters of the arts. Activities include Beacon Second Saturday, the BACA website, the Beacon Guide, Art Along the Hudson, and events such as the Beacon Hat Parade, Windows on Main Street and more.
On June 26, Beacon Riverfest will be held in the city's Riverfront Park. This free festival will feature The Fleshtones, Grammy-nominated musician Tracy Bonham, Brooklyn-based alt-country jam band Yarn and more.
So, it seems to me there is a whole bunch of cool stuff percolating down Beacon way, as there has been for a long time, and will continue to be for a long time. The Journal is planning a story on Beacon, focusing on this vibrant arts scene, and we would like your input.
What do you like about Beacon? Do you have a favorite restaurant, music venue or art gallery? Do you visit the waterfront? Have you ever been to Dia:Beacon? Has Seeger's legacy and his long history with Beacon, influenced you in any way? Are there off-the-beaten-path attractions in Beacon you would like to share?
Send any and all comments related to Beacon to me atjobarry@poughkeepsiejournal.com or mail them to: John W. Barry, 85 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie, NY, 12601.
Please include your name, town or village, state and country where you live. If you have never been to Beacon, you can learn more by visiting these websites: www.beaconarts.org , www.local845.com and for information about Seeger, www.rockhall.com .
John W. Barry's column appears every Friday. Contact him at jobarry@poughkeepsiejournal.com or 845-437-4822. | |
