John 3:16 & 17
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send
his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through
him."
John 1:1-18
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that
life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness
has not understood it.
6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a
witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might
believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did
not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not
receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God- 13children born not of natural
descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,
the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and
truth.
15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of
whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
" 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing
after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who
is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Preparing For Sunday
|
This week's study is focusing on the response that the
Pharisees make to the Triumphant Entry of Jesus into THEIR city. Seeing that Jesus can raise people from the
dead, as he demonstrated with Lazarus, we would expect them to be overwhelmed
with Joy that GOD has come to help us.
But instead they are indignant and make plans to kill both Lazarus and
Jesus.
We're going to talk this Sunday about why it is true that
some people do not want GOD to interfere with their lives.
I'm going to close the study with reference to
Dostoyevsky's BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, and
Ivan Karamazov's fictional tale about a "Grand Inquisitor." If you would like to familiarize yourself
once more with that gripping piece of literature, then go to: http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/pol116/grand.htm
See you Sunday!

Saints and Singers - Lessons from their songs, seasons & souls Presented by Russel Howell October 4, 11, 18, 25 9:30am at SHIFCO
We sing in church, but how
often have we thought about the context of the songs? We've perhaps heard
about John Newton and his writing of Amazing Grace, but do we know the
events--before and after--that led to its writing? Do we know of other
hymns he wrote, what their theology is, and why they were written? And
what about John Newton himself--what is his story and what can we learn from
it?
This four-week class focuses on the lessons we can learn from the lives and
songs of influential Christians who lived in differing cultures and eras.
If you are interested in enriching your own "song," then this class
is for you!
Russell Howell has been on the faculty of Westmont College since 1978. He
has written books and articles in both mathematics and theology.

Since the beginning of recorded history, slavery has been a scourge on the human race. While we often think that slavery is something from the past, in fact, it is very much still with us. In this class, we will look at the many faces of modern slavery and what is being done to put an end to it.
November 1 The role of Methodists and Free Methodists
in the abolitionist movement
November 8 The faces of slavery today
November 15 Modern abolitionists and anti-slavery
organizations
Ray Rosentrater is Associate Dean for Curriculum and Professor of Mathematics at Westmont College. He and Brenda have been members of the church since 1980.
