John 3:16 & 17
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send
his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through
him."
John 1:1-18
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that
life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness
has not understood it.
6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a
witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might
believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did
not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not
receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God- 13children born not of natural
descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,
the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and
truth.
15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of
whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
" 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing
after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who
is at the Father's side, has made him known.

D.E.P.T.H (Discussing Eternal
Perspective Towards Holiness) |
"Israel, Palestine, and the Bible"
Thursday, October 8, 2009
7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Upper Fellowship Room
This is an excellent time to learn about the issues
important to Christians in our culture. Join us to hear Dr. Bruce Fisk,
professor of New Testament at Westmont College. The topic is "Israel,
Palestine, and the Bible." Bruce has traveled to Israel and Palestine a
dozen times and led three student trips to the region. He is eager to
help modern Christians encounter the land of Israel/Palestine as more than
ruins and shrines. It is a land of vibrant peoples, intense struggles,
and quiet movements toward peace. Come think through the many issues
surrounding the Holy Land and consider how we conceive of Israel and Palestine
through the witness of Scripture.

Saints and Singers - Lessons from their songs, seasons & souls Presented by Russel Howell October 4, 11, 18, 25 9:30am at SHIFCO
We sing in church, but how
often have we thought about the context of the songs? We've perhaps heard
about John Newton and his writing of Amazing Grace, but do we know the
events--before and after--that led to its writing? Do we know of other
hymns he wrote, what their theology is, and why they were written? And
what about John Newton himself--what is his story and what can we learn from
it?
This four-week class focuses on the lessons we can learn from the lives and
songs of influential Christians who lived in differing cultures and eras.
If you are interested in enriching your own "song," then this class
is for you!
Russell Howell has been on the faculty of Westmont College since 1978. He
has written books and articles in both mathematics and theology.

CANCELLED Spring Retreat at Cambria Pines Lodge
At our Women's Ministries Team
meeting last Wed. Sept. 16, we reluctantly but unanimously decided to cancel
our reservation at Cambria Pines Lodge for our spring retreat March
19-21. This was due to the high cost of the weekend for women attending,
We are actively looking for a day retreat site within a 30
minute drive where we can still come together next spring for a time of
inspiration, reflection and prayer at an affordable cost to all. Watch
for further announcements as to the date and location.
