CANCELLED Spring Retreat at Cambria Pines Lodge. At our Women's Ministries Team meeting last Wed. Sept. 16, we reluctantly but unanimously decided to cancel our reservation at Cambria Pines Lodge for our spring retreat March 19-21.  This was due to the high cost of the weekend for women attending, We are actively looking for a day retreat site within a 30 minute drive where we can still come together next spring for a time of inspiration, reflection and prayer at an affordable cost to all.  Watch for further announcements as to the date and location.

Memory Verse

John 3:16 & 17
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

John 1:1-18
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "  16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Preparing For Sunday

Jesus, as a faithful Jewish Rabbi celebrates Hanukkah in our text this week.  It is at this event that he makes a claim about himself that causes the Jewish leaders to want to stone him.  We will explore that response on Sunday.

In preparation for that study, here is the background on the "Feast of Dedication" or in the Hebrew language the word we translate "dedicate" is "Hanukkah."

"By 175 BCE Antiochus IV Epiphanes ascended to the Seleucid throne. At first little changed, but under his reign, the Temple in Jerusalem was looted, Jews were massacred, and Judaism was effectively outlawed. In 167 BCE Antiochus ordered an altar to Zeus erected in the Temple. As was the normal practice of the Hellenic religion when sacrificing to the Greek gods, pigs were sacrificed on the altar to Zeus.

Antiochus's actions proved to be a major miscalculation as they provoked a large-scale revolt. Mattathias, a Jewish priest, and his five sons Jochanan, Simeon, Eleazar, Jonathan, and Judah led a rebellion against Antiochus. Judah became known as Yehuda HaMakabi ("Judah the Hammer"). By 166 BCE Mattathias had died, and Judah took his place as leader. By 165 BCE the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy was successful. The Temple was liberated and rededicated. The festival of Hanukkah was instituted by Judah Maccabee and his brothers to celebrate this event.[10] After recovering Jerusalem and the Temple, Judah ordered the Temple to be cleansed, a new altar to be built in place of the polluted one and new holy vessels to be made. According to the Talmud, olive oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was required to burn throughout the night every night. But there was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight day festival was declared by the Jewish sages to commemorate this miracle."

Though this traditional explanation of the feast is not universally accepted, all scholars agree that there was a moment after the Maccabeean Revolt in which the temple was REDEDICATED.  That is the setting for our study this Sunday.

Saints and Singers - Lessons from their songs, seasons & souls
Presented by Russel Howell
October 4, 11, 18, 25
9:30am at SHIFCO

We sing in church, but how often have we thought about the context of the songs?  We've perhaps heard about John Newton and his writing of Amazing Grace, but do we know the events--before and after--that led to its writing?  Do we know of other hymns he wrote, what their theology is, and why they were written?  And what about John Newton himself--what is his story and what can we learn from it?

This four-week class focuses on the lessons we can learn from the lives and songs of influential Christians who lived in differing cultures and eras.  If you are interested in enriching your own "song," then this class is for you!

Russell Howell has been on the faculty of Westmont College since 1978.  He has written books and articles in both mathematics and theology.

>> Peru
A Children's Day celebration took place in Lima, Peru, Sun., Aug. 16. Many in the San Miguel community were pleased to see the church building, which had been empty for two years, now open. All the seats were filled for the festive and fast-moving program put on with the help of VISA worker, Julie Schocken, and a six-member VISA team from Williamston (MI). Pastor Miguel gave an invitation for the children to receive Christ as their Savior. "I saw many hands lifted and heard many voices joined in the prayer of repentance, including some adults," reports missionary Garry Cruce. "A quick count concluded at least 160 people in attendance."
