D.E.P.T.H.
(Discussing Eternal Perspective Towards Holiness)
"SURPRISED BY JOY:
How suffering impacts our spiritual lives"
Thursday, September 10, 2009 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Upper Fellowship Room
This is an excellent time to learn about the issues important to Christians in our culture. Join us to hear Pastor Kari Morris-Guzman, a pastor from our Redlands Free Methodist Church, and her husband Aaron share from their life experience. The topic is "Surprised by Joy." Aaron and Kari have been married for 7 years. Aaron is a music teacher in Riverside and Kari is an Assistant Pastor at Brookside FMC in Redlands. Three days before their third wedding anniversary in July 2005 they were involved in a rollover car accident. Aaron only had minor injuries, but Kari sustained massive damage to her spinal cord. Her C5 vertebrae was shattered leaving her paralyzed from the shoulders down. After spending almost 6 months in a Colorado rehabilitation hospital, Aaron and Kari returned to California to resume their "new" life. God has been faithful through their journey just as He promised. Aaron and Kari desire to serve and glorify God even in challenging circumstances
For more information or to request childcare, please contact Pastor Danielle Garcia at 965-1338x222 or dgarcia@fmcsb.org

Adult Bible Fellowship Presents: "Christianity and India's Religious Traditions" Taught by Dr. Chandra Mallampalli September 13, 20, 27 9:30 a.m. SHIFCO Recreation Room
It's time for a new year of exploring topics relevant to our Christian faith in Adult Bible Fellowship! You are invited to join us each week as various teachers present material designed to help us grow in Christ. We are excited to kick off the year with Dr. Chandra Mallampalli, a member of our church and tenured professor at Westmont College. Here is a description of the class: Can a Christian practice yoga, meditate, or study other religions without compromising their faith? What are the most significant commonalities and differences between the Christian gospel and the rich traditions that have their origins in India? This class will address these questions historically and Biblically by examining key interactions between missionaries and followers of Hinduism, as well as by examining key Hindu texts such as the Bhagavadgita. A basic premise of the class will be that Christians have much to gain by studying other faiths, especially when it prompts them to reflect on their own faith, and discover things in scripture or tradition they may not have seen before. Dr. Chandra Mallampalli has been teaching in the Westmont history department since 2001. Prior to completing a doctorate in modern South Asian history from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Mallampalli earned an M.Div. from Fuller Seminary. During 2007-2008, Dr. Mallampalli was on sabbatical in India and the United Kingdom where he did research for his book project, "Race, Religion and Family in the Deccan, 1800-1880."

WOMEN'S LUNCHEON
Sat. Sept. 26 at 12-2pm
"Dealing with Stress,
Anxiety & Depression"
How do we handle the stress we experience, as well as feelings of anxiety and depression? What are some ways we can cope with these without relying only on medications? Are there ways we can prevent the harmful effects of stress in our lives, as well as lessen anxiety and depression?
All women are invited to join us on Saturday, September 26th from 12:00 - 2:00pm in the upper room for a salad lunch and presentation on "Dealing with Stress, Anxiety and Depression" taught by Cheryl Wayman, MA, MFT, Director of our Cliff Drive Christian Counseling Center. This wellness event is a great opportunity to gain new insights into how to deal with stress in our life, connect with other women in our church, as well as to invite friends who may be new to our church or dealing with these issues themselves.
Please RSVP to Cheryl Wayman (cwayman@fmcsb.org or 568-3838x229) or the church office by Sun. Sept. 20, and reserve free childcare if needed with Nelda (965-1338x226) by Sun. Sept. 20 as well. |

PREPARING FOR SUNDAY
This Sunday we will be asking God to heal our blindness, just as he did the man born blind. As you prepare consider the words of this scholar:
"John is careful to tell us that Jesus performs this miracle "having said these words" (9:6). What words? The words of 9:5-"While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." The miracle follows the claim in order to validate it. 9:5 echoes Jesus' claim in 8:12 (read), spoken shortly after the Feast of Tabernacles which lit huge lamps at the Temple to commemorate the pillar of fire in the wilderness-signifying God's presence and guidance. Jesus is claiming to be the sole source ("I and I alone") of spiritual enlightenment to a spiritually blind humanity (contra pantheism: "We already have the divine light; we're just ignorant of this"). In other words, Jesus' unique ability to restore physical sight to a congenitally blind man both illustrates and validates his claim to be the only One who can provide spiritual revelation and understanding to a spiritually blind humanity.
But although Jesus graciously grants all of us access to his spiritual light, this does not automatically enlighten us. Jn. 8:12 tells us it is our response to this light that determines its effect on our lives. Like the sun that softens butter but hardens mud, so Jesus is the light who has radically different effect on our lives depending on how we respond to him. Light received results in more sight; light rejected (exposes and) results in greater blindness. The rest of chapter 9 illustrates this principle positively in the man and negatively in the Pharisees."
See you Sunday!

Memory Verse
John 3:16 & 17
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did
not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world
through him."
John 1:1-18
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that
life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness
has not understood it.
6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a
witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might
believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did
not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not
receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God- 13children born not of natural
descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,
the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and
truth.
15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of
whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'
" 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing
after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who
is at the Father's side, has made him known.
