Preparing for Sunday
This Sunday we come to the 4th of the "SIGNS:"  The miraculous provision of our Lord in feeding five thousand people with only five loaves and 2 fish.  This provision of their "Daily Bread" in a very literal way is meant to signify the giving of Himself as the "Bread of Life."  One scholar explains three possible purposes our Lord had in this miraculous moment:

"THE PURPOSE OF THE FEEDING OF THE 5,000
There are at least three reasons why Jesus performed this miracle. The primary reason was to teach the disciples a lesson in faith. Several months before this event, He had sent out His disciples on their own for the first time to preach the gospel to the "lost sheep of the House of Israel." He gave them authority over unclean spirits, the power to heal diseases, and to raise the dead. Now they were returning from their preaching tour and Jesus wanted to hear what they did and the response they received to the gospel message. This time was sort of a "debriefing" session. As the Master Teacher, the Lord Jesus wanted to reinforce the lessons taught and learned. He challenged the disciples to continue using the power He gave them. Here was a teaching moment. The multitudes that were gathered needed to be fed. Yet it seems the disciples had a "laid back" attitude, i.e. "Well Lord, we're with you now, we'll let You do the miracles!" Jesus wanted them to get involved. After the supper, there were twelve baskets of leftover bread picked up, one basket by each disciple. I suspect that the Lord Jesus did this to "convict" each of the disciples of their lack of faith and to show them His power and provision.

The second reason was to provide a setting for the gospel to be preached the next day in the synagogue in Capernaum. John informs us that he wrote his gospel for the specific purpose of setting forth seven (or eight, depending on how you count them) "signs" (miracles) to demonstrate that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing you might have life through His name" (20:30,31). The crowd wanted to make Jesus king because He provided a "welfare program" that provided for their physical needs. The next day in the Shabbat service at the synagogue in Capernaum He expounded the real meaning of the miracle. He was the "Bread of life."
The final reason was to enhance the understanding of the disciples (Mark 8:21). Jesus appears to be trying to teach "kosher" disciples, who were always reluctant to have any association with Gentiles that salvation was for all, both Jews and Gentiles. Origen may have had a point when he allegorized the two accounts in this manner. [I must confess, I hate to admit he might be right!]. He suggested that the feeding of the 5,000 was to a Jewish audience, and the twelve baskets taken up represented the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Origen would be geographically correct if the feeding of the 5,000 took place at Moshav Almagor. The feeding of the 4,000 took place in the Decapolis area (assuming Kursi is the proper location). The seven baskets that were taken up would represent, according to Origen, the seven Gentile nations in the Land when Joshua entered it (Deut. 7:1; Acts 13:19).

If Origen is correct, the lesson is clear, the offer of salvation is for all, both Jews and Gentiles, and the disciples of the Lord Jesus should remove the prejudices they have toward those who are not like themselves and share the gospel with all. The gospel was then, and is now, the good news of salvation for any and all who put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, because He was the One who died for all their sins and rose from the dead three days later to show sin had been paid for in full. God offers His righteousness to any and all who trust the Lord Jesus, and Him alone, and not their own works of righteousness (I Cor. 15:1-4; Phil. 3:9)."  http://www.lifeandland.org/2009/02/the-feedings-of-the-multitudes-when-where-and-why/
Join us as we sit once more at the feet of our Lord and are fed by his miraculous truth and love.

Exciting News from Habitat for Humanity
On Monday, June 15, the Architectural Board of Review of Santa Barbara met and approved Habitat's plans for construction of four homes at 618 San Pascual. The plans will now go directly to the Building Department for permit review.  Habitat is requesting that the permits be approved in two phases, one for grading and site preparation, and the second for the "vertical" construction portion. This will enable us to start construction right away and invite volunteers on the build site in the Fall.

Please make sure you have completed the volunteer application on our website if you'd like to be included in invitations to join our build teams. The calendar page on the Habitat website will keep you updated on open workdays. Volunteer orientation for ReStore and San Pascual opportunities will be held monthly.  The first orientation will be Tuesday, June 23 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm.  RSVP to volunteer@sbhabitat.org

The Seven Festivals of the Messiah
Presented by Rev. Warren Simandle

June 7, 14, 21, 28
9:30 am

SHIFCO Recreation Room
(418 Santa Fe Place-across Cliff Dr. from the church)

The festivals of the Old Testament Pentateuch are some of the most fascinating, yet least understood topics in the Bible.  In Leviticus 23, Moses is instructed to institute seven Israeli Holy Days or holidays celebrating festivals for the spring and fall harvests.  Unbeknownst to him, the festivals were an incredible foreshadowing of the full scope of Christ's redemptive work.

An introduction to the festivals will be presented on May 24th, followed by a four-week exploration of the spring festivals during the month of June.  Join us for an indepth examination of the festivals, their prediction of Christ's Passion and the birth of the church, and the foundational truths to be learned through them.

Warren Simandle, an alumnus of U.C. Berkeley, Cal-State Hayward and Fuller Seminary, served with Young Life for 12 years.  He teaches math and physics at Santa Barbara High School and is a doctoral candidate in Hebraic studies.  He and his wife Leanne, a licensed minister in worship and music, began a family-oriented home church ten years ago and now lead a family worship small group for our church congregation.

Memory Verse

John 3:16 & 17
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

John 1:1-18
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "  16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
