| Preparing for Sunday |
This Sunday we are studying what scholars describe as one of the most important teachings Jesus ever did. It is about the valid evidence we have to accept the verdict that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. One of the places we turn to for such evidence is the Bible itself. As a "Bible-believing" church, we can fall into the trap of worshipping the Bible rather than the God pointed to by the writers of the Bible. Here is the way one author describes this problem: "Religious people can read scripture to find arguments to support their own arguments but not to find God. That has happened to me many times in my life. I believe that it began in Bible School. There we learned to argue and debate the Bible.
Our discussions were about winning and losing and not about finding God. I discovered that I was religious and loved my ideas about God more than I loved God. We argue over Scripture because we hate wounded pride. Pride causes us to cram our opinions down other people's throats. When we use Scripture to prove our beliefs and not to test them, we violate Scripture.
Years ago I believed that Scripture is a written revelation of God. Now I realize that the primary thrust of Scripture is God acting, not speaking. The Bible is the record of his revelation. When we fail to understand that great truth, we worship the Bible's words instead of the God they reveal.
When we read the Bible, it points us to Jesus Christ. That approach clarifies many things which puzzle and distress us. In Bible survey I learned this little ditty about the relationship between the old and new testaments. "The new is in the old contained, the old is in the new explained." The function of the scriptures is not to give life, but to point to Him who is the Way the Truth and the Life." This Sunday as we study the Word of God, may we each one experience Him and the life He alone can give. Denny

The Seven Festivals of the Messiah Presented by Rev. Warren Simandle June 7, 14, 21, 28 9:30 am SHIFCO Recreation Room (418 Santa Fe Place-across Cliff Dr. from the church) The festivals of the Old Testament Pentateuch are some of the most fascinating, yet least understood topics in the Bible. In Leviticus 23, Moses is instructed to institute seven Israeli Holy Days or holidays celebrating festivals for the spring and fall harvests. Unbeknownst to him, the festivals were an incredible foreshadowing of the full scope of Christ's redemptive work. An introduction to the festivals will be presented on May 24th, followed by a four-week exploration of the spring festivals during the month of June. Join us for an indepth examination of the festivals, their prediction of Christ's Passion and the birth of the church, and the foundational truths to be learned through them. Warren Simandle, an alumnus of U.C. Berkeley, Cal-State Hayward and Fuller Seminary, served with Young Life for 12 years. He teaches math and physics at Santa Barbara High School and is a doctoral candidate in Hebraic studies. He and his wife Leanne, a licensed minister in worship and music, began a family-oriented home church ten years ago and now lead a family worship small group for our church congregation. |

John 3:16 & 17 16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
John 1:1-18 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. 6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
