Stock Athearn ModelWestern Pacific FMC 4700cuft Hopper
BY Chris Palomarez

Western Pacific rostered many different types of hoppers each with a specific duty and commodity they handled. The last order of covered hoppers was from FMC Corporation in May 1980. The cubic foot capacity of these cars were 4700 and many of these cars are roaming around the Union Pacific railroad today!

A detail photo gallery of these cars is available on the web:
http://www.pbase.com/maverick_modeler/wp_12074&page=all

Athearn has run these cars in their RTR line. I feel the herald font is a bit different and doesn't quite capture the prototype, particularly the "S" "R" and "C". There are also a few data issues that I felt could be closer to the real thing. I recommend using the lettering removal technique described in the March 2009 Microscale Newsletter. This will also give an opportunity to renumber the car if desired.

Microscale decal set  #87-1305 (HO) and #60-1305 (N) offer the lettering and data to complete this car. Follow the basic instructions for applying decals for a quick evening project.
