MSP Testing

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

As you probably know, each year students take the Washington State Measurement of Student Progress or MSP test in the spring.

This year:

  • 6th grade students will be assessed in Reading and Math.
  • 7th grade students will be assessed in Reading, Math, and Writing.
  • 8th grade students will be assessed in Reading, Math, and Science.

Students at Odle will be taking the MSP tests according to the following calendar:

  • 6th Graders (not in the Prism program) - May 4 & 5
  • 7th Graders (not in the Prism program) - May 7, 8, 10 and 11
  • 8th Graders (not in the Prism program) - May 10, 11, 14 and 15
  • All Prism students (6th, 7th and 8th graders) - May 10, 11, 17 and 18

Most of this year's MSP tests will be taken "online" per directions from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Olympia.  Scores will be sent to parents in the late summer.

If you have any questions about this year's MSP testing, please feel free to contact your student's counselor at 425.456.6600.

Sincerely,

Eric McDowell

Principal

Put Your Finger on the Pulse of Odle

Do you want to be the first to know about the exciting events and activities going on at Odle? Would you like to share them with everyone you know, and some people you don't know yet? If so, PTSA Publicity Chair may be just the position for you. Odle's publicist will stay in touch with the PTSA Presidents and committee chairs to get all the news and develop flyers and "news blasts" about school-wide events. Please contact odleptsa@hotmail.com to be put in touch with a member of the nominating committee.

Directory Chairperson Needed

PTSA is looking for a computer-savvy person to produce the Odle Student Directory for the 2012-2013 academic year. The position involves some coordination over the summer and data collection on Taking Care of Business Days, just before school starts in September. PTSA already has a few volunteers to help with data collection, but needs someone comfortable with spreadsheets to coordinate the information gathered on separate computers and put it all together for the directory. Interested? Please contact odleptsa@hotmail.com to be put in touch with a member of the nominating committee.

Ovations

Future Problem Solvers Club

Congratulations to the Future Problem Solvers club!! Odle sent 11 teams to the FPS competition this month and all teams finished in the finals!! One team, however, placed first! Congratulations to 6th graders Brian Zhu, Jay Yang, Kevin Ma and Glen Oh!
MathCounts State Contest

On Saturday March 24th, 6 mathletes represented Odle Middle School attended 2011-2012 MathCounts Washington State Competition. Close to 200 students (top teams and students from chapter round competitions) from WA state participated.

Once again, Odle won the Washington State 2011-2012 MathCounts 1st place team! Odle team members are: Brian Gu, Abhi Sivaprasad, Patrick Wang and Allen Yang.

This is 7th year in a row that Odle Middle School Team has been winning 1st place in MathCounts Washington State Competition. This is a great achievement and very impressive track record for Odle!

In addition, our mathletes have done very well in individual competition:
Patrick Wang (7th grade) 3rd place
Abhi Sivaprasad (8th grade) 4th place
Brian Gu (8th grade) 5th place
Erich Liang (7th grade) 7th place
Allen Yang (7th grade) 8th place
Benjamin Cheung (7th grade) 23rd place

Congratulations to all the mathletes!
Math Club USJMO/AIME Achievements

Brian Gu and Patrick Wang have been officially invited to USJMO (USA Junior Math Olympiad) this year. There are only about 230 students of 10th grade or lower nationwide being invited. The qualification is based on AMC-10 and highly competitive AIME contest. Congratulations to Brian and Patrick for this awesome achievement and wish you good luck in the USJMO contest!

In addition, we have a number of students from Odle who qualified for AIME. Only top scoring 2.5% students of 10th grade or lower who took AMC-10 are qualified for AIME. Considering a lot of those students are grade 9th or 10th, it is a great achievement for middle school students! They are:
Abhi Sivaprasad (8th grade)
Phillip Wang (8th grade)
Joshua Fan (8th grade)
Eddie Lock (8th grade)
Jessica Jiang (8th grade)
Jeffrey Li (8th grade)
Suvansh Qazi (8th grade)
Allen Yang (7th grade)
Erich Liang (7th grade)
Benjamin Cheung (7th grade)
Andrew Xue (7th grade)
Masilan Manavalan (7th grade)

Congratulations to our Odle mathletes for great achievements!

When:  Thursday, May 17, 2012; 6pm-8pm

Where:  Interlake High School; 16245 NE 24th Street, Bellevue, WA 98008

Bellevue School District's 5th Annual Summer Opportunities Fair is hosted in partnership with the Parent Action and Advisory Council (PAAC) & Impulso Escolar de Bellevue.  It provides an opportunity for families to come learn about programs and activities offered during the summer months for children in grades pre-k through 12.  In turn, agencies have an opportunity to meet and possibly partner with some of the great families living and learning in Bellevue.  Over 65 agencies have been invited.

To aid in serving our district's richly diverse communities, interpreters will be available during the fair to assist families in the following six languages:  Spanish, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, and Russian.  Participating vendors have also been encouraged to bring necessary forms for qualifying families to complete for financial scholarships.

Thank you for partnering with us to reach and serve families in Bellevue School District.  Please contact me with any questions/comments.

International Student Exchange Program

EXPLORE NEW CULTURES WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOME! YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WILL LEARN, FIRST HAND, ABOUT ANOTHER EXCITING COUNTRY BY OPENING YOUR HEART AND YOUR HOME TO A HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENT FROM AROUND THE WORLD. Would you be a part of this? A host family is needed for a High School Foreign Exchange student with International Student Exchange, for the 2012/2013 school year. A potential host family is needed for students coming from the following countries: Germany, Brazil, Sweden, Spain, Vietnam, Austria,  Denmark, South Korea, China, Norway, Belgium, Thailand, Japan and France.

Students come with good English skills, full health insurance and their own personal spending money, and mainly the desire to be a member of an American family. We ask our families to provide a bed (shared room is okay with similar age range) and  meals eaten with the family. Host families do not need to have teenagers of their own; young families as well as empty nesters are excellent high school student hosts this year.

For more information about the students and the program, contact Jamin Henderson at 360-661-0552 or j.henderson33@hotmail.com.
