Urgent

Odle Representatives Needed for Boundary Review Committee

The application period for the Boundary Review Committee has been extended to Friday, April 6. At this time, we still need applications from Odle parents so that Odle has representation on this critical district committee. It's easy to apply online at the district website. Each school must have two parent representatives on the committee who can represent the current school community and the unique aspects of their school and the neighborhoods where they are located. Once formed, the committee will be shaping the boundary review and school assignment recommendation and the process has been developed to utilize the committee for a human-based approach, rather than simply replying on maps and data. In order for the committee to be successful, it will need to have representation from all schools with geographic boundaries. If you know of someone who is passionate about this issue, please encourage them to apply. Links to information and applications can be found on the district web site and applicants are encouraged to fill out the application form completely.  On-site activites for school age children will be provided so that parents may attend boundary committee meetings.

For questions, please conact the BSD communications department at 425-456-4000.

Odle PTSA

Golden Acorn Award and Outstanding Educator Award

Each year, Odle's PTSA honors a select few PTSA volunteers and staff members who have given exemplary service to the students and community of Odle Middle School. These two awards are offered by the Washington State PTA and each local PTSA unit makes donations to a state wide scholarship program in the name of each recipient.

Golden Acorn Award: This award recognizes a volunteer (s) who have given outstanding service to all children in the school community. Individuals who have gone "above and beyond" in their effort, time and commitment to our school.

Outstanding Educator Award: This award can be given to any school staff member who goes beyond the normal expectations of their job to make the learning and school environment, fun, beneficial and challenging.

Your input is needed to help the PTSA Award Committee select this year's award winners. Nomination forms are available in Odle's main office, but nominations may also be submitted electronically to any of the award committee members. Nominations are due by March 2, 2012. The award committee is made up of past Golden Acorn Award recipients.

Odle News

From the School Nurse

Common Illness & School Attendance Guidelines

Fever:

Any temperature greater than 100 degrees F is considered a fever. Students must be fever-free for 24 hours without using fever reducing medications (such as Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, etc.) in order to return to school. This applies even if the underlying cause of the fever is non-infectious, such as middle ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, etc. Students with a fever do not usually feel well enough to participate & attend school activities. It is recommended that they be given 24 hours to recover from the fever before returning to school. Please note that a student who exhibits symptoms of illness without a fever may be sent home if the nurse feels this is in the best interest of the student and the health of the other students.

Colds:

Children with an upper respiratory infection without a fever may attend school if they feel well enough to do so. It is helpful in preventing the spread of illness if children learn to use tissues to cover sneezes and coughs. WASH HANDS FREQUENTLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

Infections:

Any child who has been on antibiotic therapy for 24 hours is no longer considered infectious and may return to school. This includes infections of the eye, nose, skin and strep infections. (Exception is pink eye, not all doctors treat this, so the doctor or nurse will decide if exclusion is necessary to protect others from being contaminated).

Diarrhea:

Children with diarrhea should remain home until they are symptom free for 24 hours. The only exception is if the diarrhea is the result of a chronic condition, then a note from the doctor is needed indicating the diarrhea is not infectious.

Vomiting:

A child who has vomited the evening before or in the morning before school should remain home for that day.

Common Childhood Diseases:

If a child has chicken pox, measles or any other known untreatable contagious disease, they must be kept home until they are no longer contagious. For most common childhood diseases, the period of contagion is known. Consult your school nurse or health department for additional information.

Medications:

School personnel are not allowed to administer any medications without parent's permission and a doctor's written order. This includes all OVER THE COUNTER AND PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS. All medication must be in the original container with a current label.

THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST ILLNESS IS GOOD HANDWASHING!

Volunteer Needs

PTSA Board and Committee Chairs for Next Year

The PTSA is looking for new board of directors members and committee chairs committed to developing the thriving learning environment at Odle. Sound like you or someone you know? Please send a nomination to odleptsa@hotmail.com and you will be put in touch with one of our nominating committee members --Tamar Bayer, Patty Roberts and Jill Sulzberg.

Right now, the committee is focused on filling the secretary, assistant treasurer, membership chair, Viking Hut chair, and publicity chair positions. Everyone is welcome to serve on the PTSA. Choose what interests you or your nominee the most. These positions all offer the chance to engage with the entire Odle community and benefit our school and children. No prior PTSA experience is required, but all nominees must have been PTSA members for at least 30 days prior to the May 17 election.

Questions about these positions?  Want to know what other positions are open? Email odleptsa@hotmail.com.

Odle Students Need VIBES Parent TutorsVibes

There are Odle students who have been referred to the VIBES program (Volunteers in Bellevue's Education System) for extra help, but we don't have enough tutors to meet student needs at this time.   Volunteers spend only one hour a week tutoring a student, often during flexible times during the school day or during tutorial. Be a positive, dependable role model and have a lasting impact on a child's life!

Stop by the attendance office at Odle to fill out a form and to get more information.

Donation Needs

Rewarding Students

As you know, The Success Initiative at Odle is designed to help every student be ready for every class every day. One part of the initiative is rewarding students who are doing what they should be doing. We are trying to gather rewards for kids and we are looking for donations of the following items:

  • Movie tickets
  • Food certificates - pizza, ice cream, etc.
  • Unique, fun school supplies - mechanical pencils, inexpensive calculators
  • iTunes certificates
  • Sport event tickets
  • Music event tickets
  • Sport team gear

If you would be willing to donate any of these (or any other items), we would greatly appreciate it! All donations can be brought to the Main Office at Odle.

Bellevue School District News

Gifted Program Changes

Recently, the District announced changes to the gifted identification process. Community forums were held to explain the new process, the timeline for implementation, and the schools where the gifted centers will be housed. In addition, parents were asked to provide comments, questions, and input on programming. Since the forums, some inaccurate information has started to circulate which could leave parents with false impressions. In short, no programming/curriculum decisions have been finalized. Also, no decisions have been made regarding how students will be grouped, or served. The Gifted Advisory Committee (GAC) is currently working on program recommendations to be made to the Cabinet by mid-April. You can read the latest update on the district's Gifted Advisory Committee web page. A link to the committee page is on the front page of the district web site.
