Friends of Odle Music (FOOM) News
Here is how you can help enable and sustain the quality music eduation for our 300+ music students:
Attend the Odle Spring Fundraiser this Friday 6:30-9:30 pm at Tam O'Shanter Country Club (1313 183rd Avenue N.E., Bellevue, 98008). This guaranteed to be a fun night with our teachers and parents, listening to Mr. Robers' adult band "Critical Mass" perform. Your participation will help raise the money we need for music and instrument purchase / maintenance.
Mention "Odle Music Program" and vote for either band, choir or orchestra when you go to Peaks Frozen Yogurt at the Crossroads Mall. Help spread the word among your friends, neighbors, high schoolers, etc. 20% of your sale will be donated to our music program.
Order your copy of "Sounds of Odle - Spring 2012" now. $10 per CD. The CD will feature Odle Symphony, Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Club, Orchestra, and Choir for their performances in the spring. Contact vickiliao168@gmail.com. |
Parent Helpers Needed for Student Social
We need 6-7 parents to help at the student social scheduled for Friday, March 30. Please email odleptsa@hotmail.com if you are able to assist on that date starting at 3 p.m. until the end of the social. Volunteers will be in the library game area, coat/backpack room, snack table, and at the entrance to the MUR. Thanks in advance for your help. |
Viking Hut
Viking Hut has school supplies and often at lower prices than the office supply stores! TRI-FOLD BOARDS are available for $5 and they are available in white, yellow, green, blue or red. All 7th graders need this type of display board for their upcoming cultural projects. Get yours soon while supplies last.
Viking Hut needs new leadership next year! Pam and Beth have graduating 8th graders and are hoping 3 people will step up this spring so they will have the opportunity to train and orient them to the responsibilites. Running the Viking Hut is ideally a 3 person job. One person manages volunteers which can be done primarily at home on your computer, the second manages inventory pricing and the business responsibilities and the third is the manager of inventory. All three volunteers help with maintaining inventory. Odle students love the hut and we are the only middle school with a student store open during the school day.

PTSA Board and Committee Chairs for Next Year
The PTSA is looking for new board of directors members and committee chairs committed to developing the thriving learning environment at Odle. Sound like you or someone you know? Please send a nomination to odleptsa@hotmail.com and you will be put in touch with one of our nominating committee members --Tamar Bayer, Patty Roberts and Jill Sulzberg.
Right now, the committee is focused on filling the secretary, assistant treasurer, membership and news editor positions. Everyone is welcome to serve on the PTSA. Choose what interests you or your nominee the most. These positions all offer the chance to engage with the entire Odle community and benefit our school and children. No prior PTSA experience is required, but all nominees must have been PTSA members for at least 30 days prior to the May 17 election.
Questions about these positions? Want to know what other positions are open? Email odleptsa@hotmail.com. |
Odle Students Need VIBES Parent Tutors
There are Odle students who have been referred to the VIBES program (Volunteers in Bellevue's Education System) for extra help, but we don't have enough tutors to meet student needs at this time. Volunteers spend only one hour a week tutoring a student, often during flexible times during the school day or during tutorial. Be a positive, dependable role model and have a lasting impact on a child's life!
Stop by the attendance office at Odle to fill out a form and to get more information. |

Rewarding Students
As you know, The Success Initiative at Odle is designed to help every student be ready for every class every day. - Movie tickets
- Food certificates - pizza, ice cream, etc.
- Unique, fun school supplies - mechanical pencils, inexpensive calculators
- iTunes certificates
- Sport event tickets
- Music event tickets
- Sport team gear
If you would be willing to donate any of these (or any other items), we would greatly appreciate it! All donations can be brought to the Main Office at Odle. |

Odle Boys Club Gets Donation from QFC
A huge thank you to QFC for their donation to the Odle Boys Club. Principal Eric McDowell asked the PTSA to help fund snacks for the Odle Boys Club. The PTSA turned to the community, and the QFC store in Crossroads generously donated a giftcard. Jon Moen, manager of the Crossroads QFC said, "Quality Food Centers is proud to keep helping the community and our schools, as we have been doing since 1959." |

Congratulations to Odle Symphony!!
Last Saturday, 86 of our academy orchestra students and select band students competed as a full symphonic orchestra (aka Odle Symphony) in the Northwest Orchestra Festival. The Festival was attended by 57 of the finest high school groups in the Northwest (including arts magnet high school in Seattle, Bellevue High and Newport High from Bellevue).
Not only was Odle Symphony the youngest group there, Odle received the highest score in the 7th-9th grade full symphonic orchestra division from the first round of performance, and ranked third across all 7th-12th grade full symphonic orchestras. In the final (and we only had time to play two songs), we received the 2nd place based on a split vote by three judges.
In addition, the audience and judges were so impressed by the songs we chose to play, and how a middle school symphonic orchestra played the difficult songs so well!! Our students have a lot to be proud of.
Congratulations to Mr. Blough, Mr. Roberts and all students and families who are part of this accomplishment!! As I've heard many of the students said about this experience..."it was intense; we learned so much yet at the same time it was so much fun!!"
And of course, we could not have had a safe and fun trip without the following chaperons and parent helpers. THANK YOU!

"Bob Albo Field" Dedication
Legendary Newport High School coach Bob Albo will throw out the first pitch at the baseball field named in his honor following a dedication ceremony on Saturday, March 24. Alumni, former colleagues and the community are invited to help dedicate "Bob Albo Field," the first Bellevue School District property to be named after an individual. Albo taught in Bellevue for 26 years and coached the Newport Knights baseball team from 1972-1983 and 1992-1996. Read more
Boundary Review Committee:
The application period for the Boundary Review Committee has been extended to Friday, April 6. While we have received a lot of applications, we still have yet to receive applications for some schools or a sufficient number for other schools. Each school must have two parent representatives on the committee who can represent the current school community and the unique aspects of their school and the neighborhoods where they are located. Once formed, the committee will be shaping the boundary review and school assignment recommendation and the process has been developed to utilize the committee for a human-based approach, rather than simply replying on maps and data. In order for the committee to be successful, it will need to have representation from all schools with geographic boundaries. If you know of someone who is passionate about this issue, please encourage them to apply. Links to information and applications can be found on the district web site and applicants are encouraged to fill out the application form completely. |

Help Shape Bellevue's Transit Future!
If you take the online survey by March 23 you may be eligible to win a prize!
What do you need as a transit customer or what would entice you to ride transit? Maybe, you would like a more convenient bus route in your neighborhood, or you just want to be able to get to downtown Bellevue more quickly. Do you need better pedestrian or bicycle access? These are only a couple of questions that we are asking on the Transit Plan survey.
The City of Bellevue is launching its Bellevue Transit Master Plan effort to examine the current state of transit service and ridership in Bellevue and make recommendations to King County Metro and Sound Transit on how to best improve mobility in Bellevue through efficient transit service.
Those who complete the Bellevue survey are eligible to win one of three prizes graciously provided by downtown Bellevue restaurants. Prizes include a $75 gift certificate to Purple Café & Wine Bar and $100 gift certificates to Daniel's Broiler and El Gaucho.
The survey can be found at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6TJV5L3
For more information on the project contact Franz Loewenherz, Senior Transportation Planner at the City of Bellevue, at 425-452-4077 or Floewenherz@bellevuewa.gov |

Math Hour at UW for Middle School Students
Dear Math Enthusiasts,
After two great seasons, the MATH HOUR at UW for middle and junior high school students is starting again in the Spring. Our first talk will be given by Professor Jon Brundan from the University of Oregon. You can find the abstract for the talk and other information on our website: http://www.math.washington.edu/~mathcircle/mathhour/.
As usual, we'll have three talks this year and the Math Olympiad in June. The lectures are free and open to everyone. The Math Olympiad is also free but requires a pre-registration. We've been very fortunate to get volunteer help from many professional mathematicians to run the Olympiad but we need to know how many kids are coming to plan accordingly. The link to the registration form will be posted on our website on April 16.
Here is the remaining schedule for the Spring:
April 15, 1-2pm, Steve Klee, UC Davis, "The Mathemagic of Magic Squares"
May 13, 1-2pm, Eric Brechner, Microsoft, "Rainbow Mathematics"
June 10, 9:30-3pm, Math Hour Open Olympiad
All events are held in Savery Hall at the University of Washington
Hope to see everyone in March! |
