Parent Homework

Ask your child about last Monday's internet safety assembly with Seattle Police Officer Stefanie Thomas.  Possible questions to geneerate discussion:

1) Tell me about the fine print on the Facebook user agreement.
2) What did the police officer say about her younger sister's Facebook page?
3)  I hear that the police officer said many kids know more than their parents about technology topics.  Tell me something you think might surprise me.
4) What's a social media background check?
5) What do you do when someone cyber bullies you or sends you something inappropriate online?  (answers: don't respond, save evidence, report it.)

For those who missed the Parent Talk on Internet Safety, Stefanie Thomas will be giving the talk again at Chinook Middle School on March 6 at 6:30 pm.
Friends of Odle Music (FOOM) - Donation from "Peaks Frozen Yogurt"

Craving for frozen yogurt? Do you know between February 14 and March 14, Peaks Frozen Yogurt will donate 20% of your sale directly to FOOM, the music booster club, to support our students and teachers in buying music, instrument maintenance / procurement, and more?

Just mention "Odle Music Program" and vote for either band, choir or orchestra at the point of sale.

As a reward for customers, if the customers join the Peak's Summit Club, they will get 10 free ounces for every 8 yogurts they buy (the size of each purchase doesn't matter).

Morning Traffic at Odle - Your Help Needed

Traffic Guidelines to Reduce Congestion, Improve Timeliness and Safety:
  • Please pull all the way forward in the drop-off circle at Odle. Doing so allows nearly 9 full cars to drop off simultaneously.
  • Please do not drop off students on NE 8th. There are no stops for students and stopping at the Metro Transit stop is not safe for cars or kids.
  • Please do not pull into Stevenson so that you can turn around and get through the light. This is dangerous for both Odle and Stevenson families.
  • Please allow those using the Bellevue City Pool to get into the parking lot. Remember, we have a shared entrance and lot.

I truly appreciate your attention to this important matter. The more we work together, the faster and safer dropping off students will become.

Standards Based Grading in Math

All Math students are working on meeting or exceeding standard on the national Common Core Standards. For example, recently in Intermediate Math Top 2, students were graded on being able to "solve problems by creating a scale drawing, finding lengths and finding areas." Grades are now out of 4 points:
4 Exceeding Standard (ES)
3 Meeting Standard (MS)
2, 1 or 0 Not Yet Meeting Standard (NY)

Students not meeting or exceeding standard will continue to receive homework to support them in meeting standard. Optional practice will given to students who have met or exceeded standard.

Message from the School Nurse

Bellevue High School Cheerleaders and a few others from around the district attended an event 10 days ago where many with struck ill with flu like - abdominal illness.  It has been determined that the culprit was Norovirus Virus.  People that were ill can be carriers of the virus and spread the virus for up to a month (see below). The main recommendations for preventing transmission is GOOD PERSONAL HYGIENE - HANDWASHING - HANDWASHING.  Keeping surfaces clean (diluted bleach) and not sharing food items is also good practice.

Description
Norovirus is the official name for the group of viruses previously called Norwalk-like viruses. It is an acute viral infection of the gastrointestinal system. The CDC estimates that 23 million cases of acute gastrointestinal infections are due to norovirus, and that at least 50 percent of all foodborne outbreaks of gastrointestinal infections can be attributed to noroviruses. It is characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps and can include a low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and lethargy. There are many different strains of norovirus and people can develop the illness repeatedly when exposed to different strains of the virus. Treatment consists of supportive care, primarily fluid and electrolyte replacement.

Mode of Transmission
Norovirus is easily spread person-to-person by hands, toys, bathroom surfaces, and contaminated food. It may also be transmitted by aerosolized vomitus to persons caring for or cleaning up after acutely ill persons.

Incubation Period
24-48 hours, but can occur within 12 hours of exposure.

Infectious Period
Individuals may remain infectious for up to 1 month after the onset of symptoms.

Odle Student Directories

Bright yellow Odle student directories should have come home with your student.  We printed enough for each Odle family to have ONE copy and asked teachers to give them to students who are either the only child at Odle or the youngest sibling at Odle.  If you don't have one, check your child's backpack.  If your child was absent or did not receive a copy, you can stop by the main office and pick one up.   (If you ended up with more than one somehow, we'd love to have extras returned so that we have enough for any new families that come to the school).   Thanks to parent Linnea Eng for taking on this job of collecting all the information and formatting our directory for 2011-2012!

February is Change Your Password Month!

Student passwords for school computers will expire soon.  During February, students can change their password on any school computer, including the wireless laptops.  Remind your student to update their password during lunch or Tutorial in a lab, classroom or the library.  Instructions are posted throughout the building.

FOOM needs at least 2 music parents to join the Board next year as our 8th grade parents leave Odle. Most critical are "secretary" and "VP for Orchestra". We'd also love to have more than one parent take one of the following positions: president, VP for Band, VP for Choir, treasure, and grant advisor. If you are interested in joining or have questions, please contact Vicki Liao (vickiliao168@gmail.com).

Bellevue School District News

Bellevue School District Superintendent Search Process

The Bellevue School Board of Directors will conduct a search for the next Superintendent to lead the Bellevue School District.  In late 2008, the District hired recruitment firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to conduct a public input process to generate a list of characteristics desired by the Bellevue community in a Superintendent.  The list of desired characteristics was derived from over 500 questionnaire responses and 210 interviews with parents, teachers, support staff, community and business members, administrators and board members.

The Board will use the 2008 list of Desired Characteristics as a starting point and ask the community to provide any additional input based on their perspectives and current climate and conditions in the District.  This input will help to inform the Board of desired characteristics when evaluating candidates.  Information and a copy of the desired characteristics can be found on the district web site at http://www.bsd405.org/about-us/administration/superintendent/superintendent-search.aspx

Please e-mail the Board of Directors with your perspective about the Desired Characteristics and the Superintendent Search.  Due to the volume of e-mail the Board receives, please put 'Supt Search-(today's date)' in the subject line of your e-mail so Board members can quickly access your comments about the search.  Board e-mails should be sent to board@bsd405.org.

The following public sessions will be held to encourage two-way conversations with the Board about the Superintendent Search and the Desired Characteristics.

  • February 16, 2012 at Sammamish High School Performing Arts Center at 6:30 pm

Prospective applicants with questions should contact Human Resources at HR.info@bsd405.org.

Questions about the public process can be sent to Jacque Coe, Director of Communications & Community Engagement at coej@bsd405.org.

BSD Superintendent Search Input

We had the first of several Public Input Sessions last week for the Superintendent Search and a good discussion with parents, teachers and community members.  In that discussion, board members asked that a message be sent to students to encourage them to provide their thoughts, input and perspective on what their school district needs in a superintendent.  Students can simply e-mail the board at board@bsd405.org with a subject line of 'Supt Search' and let the board know what they think.  The board would really like to hear their thoughts.
