Odle's First Diversity Potluck: The World Lives in Odle
To celebrate one of the many strengths of Odle Middle School--the diversity within our community--we are having a casual family potluck on January 12 from 5pm-6pm.
Where: Odle Library
When: January 12, 5 - 6 pm
Who: Odle families who would like to celebrate the diversity at our school, meet other parents and have a good time.
Please bring: A dish from your ethnic heritage to share.
Important Note: Is your child in orchestra? If so, have them bring their orchestra clothes to school so that they can come to the potluck and then change for their concert! The orchestra concert starts at 7pm! Also, there is a general PTSA meeting immediately following the potluck and just before the orchestra concert. Families will be welcome to stay for the meeting if they like! |
General PTSA Meeting - Cancelled
We apologize for cancelling the PTSA meeting this Thursday. There was a conflict for many of our officers with the high school orientation at Sammamish. Our next general meeting will be on March 15. |
Principal/Parent Coffee
Please join us on Friday morning, January 13 at 9 am for coffee and breakfast treats with Odle Principal Eric McDowell. Cyber bullying and Internet Safety are topics about which our principal has first-hand knowledge and insights to share. We will discuss these as well as anything else of interest to you. Please come and meet the principal as well as some other Odle parents! |

You might choose the guided tour if this is your first child in middle school or if you are unfamiliar with Odle. You might choose the self-guided visitation if you have had children already go through middle school or if you are already familiar with Odle.
Again, we invite all families to the Odle Showcase on Thursday, January 19th from 6:30 to 8:15!

Band, Orchestra and Choir Fundraising
FOOM (Friends of Odle Music), ASB and the PTSA have been actively fundraising to support our excellent music programs at Odle. Following is a summary of recent events, as well as future plans.
The band and orchestra CD sale was a huge success! Thanks to all the students who sold the CD's and to the large number of parents who turned out to put together the CD's and distribute them. Special thanks to FOOM president Vicki Liao who has put in countless hours coordinating and making this project happen. In total, the band received $1286.11 and the orchestra received $1386.01. Great job everyone!
The PTSA has made several grants to the music programs at Odle. The choir received a $500 grant to purchase new music and the band and orchestra received $1500 to pay for music coaching. The Bellevue School Foundation also made a $500 grant to help fund the Honors Orchestra.
The bake sale held at the last band concert raised $376. Thank you to all who brought treats to share and all who bought them.
Finally, please SAVE THE DATE for the Odle Spring Fundraiser which will be held on Friday, March 23! A percentage of the money raised will help fund the music programs. Last year, $3500 raised at the event went to the band, orchestra, and choir and paid for instrument purchase and repair and sheet music. Please plan to attend if you can, and make a donation if you can't be there!
The next Friends of Odle Music meeting will be held on Thursday February 2 at 7 pm in the Odle library. We would love to have more parents attend - all are welcome! |

Legislative Corner
Washing State Supreme Court Ruling
In a clear win for children, the Washington State Supreme Court ruled unanimously last Thursday that the state was violating its constitutional paramount duty to amply support K-12 education. For full details and how you can tell your legislators we need immediate and continuous progress toward ESHB 2261 (the definition) and SHB 2776 (the phase in plan),
Charter School Forum
The WA State PTA is holding a Charter School Forum in Seattle on Tues, 1/17 from 6:30 to 8:30 at Washington Middle School.
This promises to be a terrific evening with outstanding speakers - two representatives from the UW @Bothell - one pro and one con, how's that for controversy. Also on the agenda is the President of the Seattle teachers union and PTA folks include Beth Sigall and Ramona, our intrepid lobbyist. They will all give presentations to help us navigate the pros and cons of a potential charter school bill.

Save the date! Odle Spring Fundraiser, Friday, March 23rd at Tam O'Shanter Country Club
The procurement team needs your assistance NOW to create a fabulous auction experience. Your assistance in procuring items for the silent auction can help make it a success.
Think about items you may have access to personally or through your employer such as...
- You or your company has access to Sounders or Seahawks Tickets, the Symphony or Ballet tickets?
- How about your network of family and friends? A business owner that would like to donate to the local neighborhood school?
- Maybe a vacation home that has a spare week or weekend to donate?
Do you have recommendations of businesses that you patronize that the Procurement committee could contact? We'd love to support local businesses in the area, so if you have recommendations, send them our way!

Success Initiative Volunteers Needed!
Now that we are back to school, we would love to have more parents sign up on the "success" calendar at the PTSA homepage: http://www.odlemiddleschool.org. The Odle staff report that they could really use more help in the work completion and study zones after school. It is a short period of time and a very easy job-- so please consider signing up even if it's just once a month. Having a parent or two there helps keep kids on task! Just click the spot on the calendar that you would like, and type in your name. Then sign in at the main office and report to the library on the day you selected. Thanks in advance! |

Bellevue School District News |
Letter from the Superintendent
Parents and Guardians --
This season brings some challenges for me and my family.
My mother in California, who is a stroke victim and has been battling cancer, is in the process of entering hospice care. Many of you have gone through similar experiences and understand how difficult these experiences are. I have a limited number of family members who can help with my mother, and at this time I must respond to her needs. Due to the wide range of medical, legal, financial and emotional issues that accompany such a family issue, I have made the difficult decision to take a leave at this time to support my mother. My leave will begin Monday and I will keep the School Board and my office apprised frequently of my situation.
Assistant Superintendent Eva Collins will assume a temporary role as Interim Superintendent. Eva will be supported in her role by the members of the Cabinet and I have spent time with that team to arrange for additional support to ensure instruction and operations continue seamlessly. I will be in contact with Eva frequently.
The decision to take this leave has been a very difficult one for me because I am committed to the direction and in support of the outstanding work occurring in this district. I am only able to step away for this leave at this time because of the amazing work by each and every colleague in this district. Our direction for children is clear and the team in place in every building is experienced and committed, so I am comfortable to take this temporary leave for my family.
I appreciate your understanding at this time and hope your season is filled with the love and happiness that only family and friends can bring.
Best regards,
Amalia |
