Odle's First Diversity Potluck:  The World Lives in Odle

To celebrate one of the many strengths of Odle Middle School--the diversity within our community--we are having a casual family potluck on January 12 from 5pm-6pm.

Where:  Odle Library
When:  January 12, 5 - 6 pm
Who:  Odle families who would like to celebrate the diversity at our school, meet other parents and have a good time.
Please bring:  A dish from your ethnic heritage to share.

Important Note:  Is your child in orchestra?  If so, have them bring their orchestra clothes to school so that they can come to the potluck and then change for their concert!  The orchestra concert starts at 7pm!  Also,  there is a general PTSA meeting immediately following the potluck and just before the orchestra concert.  Families will be welcome to stay for the meeting if they like!

Give the Gift of Camp Orkila

A message for all Odle families from Principal Eric McDowell and Odle's 6th Grade Team

Did your student have an awesome time at Camp Orkila?  Would you like to make that opportunity possible for this year's 6th grade class?  Do you have plans to make charitable donations prior to the end of 2011?  If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Odle's Camp Orkila Fund.  Donations are eligible for company matching, including Microsoft and The Boeing Company.

Planning for our annual 6th grade trip to Camp Orkila is well underway.  More detailed information will be sent home soon to our 6th grade families, but we wanted to share this opportunity for giving with you now.  Our trip to Camp Orkila is fully funded through individual payments and generous donations from Odle families, the PTSA, and ASB.  The cost of camp has risen slightly this year, and we are looking to our wonderful Odle community for help.  Your donations help make camp a possibility for all students and help cover camp fees for our fabulous high school volunteer counselors and Odle staff who go to camp.  We are sending the largest 6th grade class ever this spring.  This will require our sending additional high school counselors and Odle staff members.

Please help make this experience possible again this year. Families with students in any grade level are welcome to support the 6th grade camp experience. If you are interested in helping us reach our camp fundraising goal, you can make your donation in the school office with cash or check made out to Odle Middle School, or you can make the donation online using a credit card.  It is important to note that you will be charged a small convenience fee of $3.00 per transaction. The donation will appear on your credit card statement as Bellevue School District Online.  In order to access the Point of Sale online, please visit the following site:

Once on the site, you will need to use the login ID and password for your student. An account has already been created using your student's ID number as the user name, and the default password is your student's last name

We thank you in advance for your support of 6th Grade Camp!

Odle Reading Lab gets donation from Target

Audrey Bennett from the Odle Reading Lab asked the PTSA to help fund small items that could be used in her classes, which provide extra reading help to some students. The PTSA turned to the community, and the Target store in Factoria generously donated a giftcard. "Many thanks to the Target Store in Factoria for donating a $50 gift certificate for the Reading Lab.  I'll use these funds to purchase supplies and materials that encourage my students to make the best possible use of their time while in the Reading Lab," said teacher Audrey Bennett.  A Target representative replied: "We are proud to support education in the community and our students."

Head Lice: A Note From Ms. Udris, School Nurse- Winter break is the perfect time to check your children for lice

Odle has experienced a few cases of head lice this year. Like colds and flu season, head lice is common in schools. It is important that families are educated regarding head lice in order to assist us in addressing the problem.

Parents can help by checking their child's hair for lice EVERY WEEK during the school year. Complaints of an itchy scalp are a warning sign of lice and definitely warrant a closer look. Live lice (the actual bug) are difficult to find, but you will find the eggs of the lice. The female lice lays "sesame seed" sized eggs (nits) on the hair shaft usually within one inch of the scalp. A fingernail is usually required to slide the nit off the hair shaft.

Effective ways to prevent your child from getting lice are aimed at eliminating any opportunities for the lice to crawl onto their scalp. Children must not share hats. Hugging and close personal contact increases the risk of transmission. Tea tree or lavender oil are rumored to be distasteful to lice and are available in shampoo and soap.

Internet Safety Documents

Thank you Odle parents who attended our Internet Safety night!  It was a great turnout for a very informative evening. Seattle Police offer Stefanie Thomas has provided some documents for families.  They can be found on the Odle PTSA website:  www.odlemiddleschool.org.   We hope you enjoyed the evening.

Because our guest speaker at parent night was so fantastic,  our principal and our PTSA have decided to bring Stefanie Thomas back for a student assembly on Cyber-bullying, Facebook, and Internet Safety for the students!  She will be back at Odle on Monday, February 13 for a morning assembly!

Volunteer Needs

CalendarALL HANDS ON DECK!  HELP KIDS BE SUCCESSFUL AT ODLE!

The faculty "Success Team" has requested some extra help from parents after school in the Work Completion Zone (MUR) and Homework Club (Library).  This will mainly be light supervision with an occasional question.

To make it very easy to sign up, we have put a "SUCCESS CALENDAR" on the PTSA website:  http://www.odlemiddleschool.org.  Parents can simply click a spot and add or delete their name.  Please consider signing up to help once a month after school at Odle from 2:33 - 4:10 (M, T, TH or F).

If everyone takes a spot, we will all have played a role in creating a supportive and effort-rewarding school atmosphere so that our students can thrive.

Parents who plan to volunteer regularly for success, please fill out a VIBES form which can be found in the attendance office.  It is free and easy to fill out, and once you have done one, they are kept on file and do not have to be done again.  The district requires these forms for regular volunteers and field trip chaperones, etc.

Thank You

Thank You, Reflections Chair

Odle PTSA and Odle families would like to thank our hardworking and supportive volunteer, Ilona Larson, for organizing the Reflections art competition over the past several months!  This was a lot of work which included doing publicity, finding judges, coordinating the display and guiding students through the process.  Thank you so much Ilona for making it possible for Odle students to participate in this competition.  Our finalists will move on to the next level.

We'd Really Like Your Feedback!

Just over a month ago, the District launched a new web site and wanted to give parents some time to get used to the new site before asking your opinion.  Please take a moment to help with feedback through this quick and easy survey.  The survey takes about two minutes to complete.  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V88MLQT  Thanks!

Boundary Review Update

District staff is starting work to prepare for a Boundary Review process.  The process to review boundaries of all schools in the district is expected to take 18 months or more.  The District has identified staff members to form a technical team and will identify what information may be needed to develop a springboard proposal to present to a citizen committee to use as a starting point.  The charge of the Boundary Review Committee would be to develop a district-wide school boundary recommendation to the Superintendent.  A tentative timeline would launch applications for the citizens-based Boundary Review Committee in spring 2012 with committee meetings potentially beginning in the late summer of 2012.  Read background on issue and the process.

Deadline extended forTitle IX Advisory Committee

Equity is an important value in the Bellevue School District and the District regularly engages in reviews to ensure we keep this value in sight.  One area which needs review is the District's federal Title IX compliance.  Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects people from discrimination based on sex, in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.  The District is establishing a committee to serve in an advisory capacity as the District reviews its Title IX compliance efforts.  Learn more and apply
