Magazine Drive Has Been Extended!

The Odle Associated Student Body (ASB) magazine drive has been extended because our sales are low this year, and we need to keep trying!  Proceeds from magazine sales fund many things including assemblies, activities buses, field trips, student socials and so much more!  Mondays are the turn in days for orders.  Keep this in mind for holiday gifts!  Please contact Cathi Hervey at herveyjc@hotmail.com if you have any questions.  Thanks for supporting Odle students!

Help Mr. Williams Get Science Games on DonorsChoose.org

Thank you very much for your previouse contributions to purchase a new microscope for the Odle Science Department!  We have collected sufficient funds to purchase the microscope.

Odle's Science Teacher, Brendan Williams, has submitted a new project for science games on DonorsChoose.org:  http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=667813

The games will provide resources for students who quickly absorb material to extend their learning in a highly engaging mode.  Imagine finishing an assignment early because you understand the concept and you are then given more "work" to do.  Yuck!  Also imagine the struggling learner who is presented with the same information in the same way for a fourth time.  Why expect a different result with the same approach?  These games will give struggling learners a different avenue into some of the main concepts we study during the year.

Requested games include:  Condon - The DNA Game, The Cell Game, and Predator - The Food Chain Game.  These games explore several of the topics that we address in our 6th grade Life Science course and our Prism 8th grade Biology classes.  Reviewers' comments about another requested game, Biome and Ecosystem Bing Game, included:  effective, engaging, grade level appropriate and saves time.

Please consider contributing towards this project.  If you still have your $10 DonorsChoose gift card from Starbucks,  please direct the resources toward this new project.  The expiration date for the gift cards is November 8.

Thank you for your support!

Volunteer Needs

CalendarALL HANDS ON DECK!  HELP KIDS BE SUCCESSFUL AT ODLE!

The faculty "Success Team" has requested some extra help from parents after school in the Work Completion Zone (MUR) and Homework Club (Library).  This will mainly be light supervision with an occasional question.

To make it very easy to sign up, we have put a "SUCCESS CALENDAR" on the PTSA website:  http://www.odlemiddleschool.org.  Parents can simply click a spot and add or delete their name.  Please consider signing up to help once a month after school at Odle from 2:33 - 4:10 (M, T, TH or F).

If everyone takes a spot, we will all have played a role in creating a supportive and effort-rewarding school atmosphere so that our students can thrive.

Parents who plan to volunteer regularly for success, please fill out a VIBES form which can be found in the attendance office.  It is free and easy to fill out, and once you have done one, they are kept on file and do not have to be done again.  The district requires these forms for regular volunteers and field trip chaperones, etc.

Spring Fundraiser Volunteers

We are looking for 5 volunteers to join our committee to work on the Odle 2nd annual spring fundraiser in March 2012.  We have 3 open positions - so grab a friend and let's raise some money for our school!

Marketing/Advertising:  2 people to handle all marketing/advertising for the event (primarily done on-line via Odle website and Viking News)

Procurement:  2 people to each procure 10 silent auction baskets; contacts will be provided

Invitations:  1 or 2 people to design, print and mail the invitations

What are we raising money for?  Last year we raised $15,000 that funded 4 primary areas:

* $3,500 paid for 9 science monitors

* $3,500 sent 8 Odle Teachers to the ACSD

* $3,500 for Music/Orchestra instrument repairs & cleaning

* $3,500 to the general funding of PTSA related items

If you can assist, please contact Julia Krill at jkrill@windermere.com

Help 18,000 students with one donation to the Bellevue Schools Foundation

At Curriculum Night, Bellevue Schools Foundation Trustees and volunteers highlighted the impact the Foundation makes in every classroom, every day.  Your financial support makes that impact possible.

Odle benefited in lots of different ways from BSF last year.  AVID, Project Readiness, VIBES, Music Grants, Faces of Odle, Don't Tell Jessica (anti-bullying), Red Scarf Girl author visit, Social Studies grant and Pacific Science Center field trip are just a few of the programs directly impacting our school.  Visit BSF's website to learn more about supported programs and volunteers opportunities, or contact our school's interim BSF Rep (Catherine Smith, catherine@hufamily.com 425-558-2004).

In early November, Foundation volunteers will call every parent in the district and invite you to make a gift to support our students.  If you'd like to make a gift before that call, drop off a check at the school office, call the Foundation at 425-456-4199, or give online.

School staff can support the foundation by writing in Bellevue Schools Foundation for your United Way contribution or by using payroll deduction.  Member of the School Employees Credit Union of Washington grow their donations through the Foundation giving program.
