Photos Distributed Last Week - Picture Retake Day on October 20

Photos were distributed to students during lunch last week, and the remaining photos have been distributed to teachers to hand out in 1st or 7th period. If you purchased photos during Taking Care of Business Days and have not received them, please check with your student.

Picture Retake Day is Thursday, October 20.  Just come to school and go to classes as usual, and you will be called out of class. This is for students who had a photo taken but did not like the photos, or there is something wrong with the photos.  If the mistake is the photographer's mistake, there will be no charge.  However, if you don't like the photo because of your hair or the expression on your face, something like that, you will need to re-purchase photos.  If you have not had your photo taken at all and just want an ID card, you may do that on this day, as well.
Principal - Parent Coffee Talk on Friday, October 28

The next Principal - Parent Coffee Talk will be held on Friday, October 28, 9:00 am - 10:00 am in the Odle Library.  Topics are still being decided, and will be posted on the Odle PTSA website and published in a future Viking News.

Help Mr. Williams Get a New Microscope on DonorsChoose.org

On October 5 Starbucks stores in King County will be distributing $10 gift cards for DonorsChoose.org.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is investing $500,000 in King County through this campaign.  It is part of a movement to get as many citizens as possible involved in local schools.  People will be able to go online and use this $10 gift card to help pay for any King County teach project listed there.

Odle's Science Teacher, Brendan Williams, has submitted a project for a new, higher resolution digital microscope for use in our science academy.  The project can be found at:  http://www.donorschoose.org/we-teach/1066756.704923723

Please pick up a $10 gift card from Starbucks today, go online to Mr. Williams' project, and help contribute towards the microscope for Odle!

(Note:  You will still be able to donate after Oct. 5 - but the free $10 gift card is only available on Oct. 5 at Starbucks stores.)

Parent Internet Viewer (PIV) is Online

Bellevue School District's Parent Internet Viewer is now online to check your student's grades, assignments, and attendance: https://grades.bsd405.org/piv/

Note:  A letter to parents was mailed on the week of September 19 with your student's ID# and the passwords to access the PIV.  If you did not receive it, please contact the office.

Activity Bus Routes and Stops

A reference guide listing Odle activity bus routes and stops is now available on the Odle PTSA website (Guide is on the bottom of the page): http://odleptsa.schools.officelive.com/AfterSchoolActivities.aspx

Use this guide to determine what activity bus your student would take should they require to take the bus home at 4:10 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  You just need to locate the route number and stop your student normally takes and follow across and it will tell you what Activity Bus route number and stop you need.

Success Initiative Feedback Email:  successodle@hotmail.com

Dear Parents,

The PTSA has created an email account to make it easier for you to give constructive feedback on the new success initiative.  Suggestions for improvement as well as compliments will be collected and passed along to our principal and the faculty success team so that they can make the program as effective as possible.  We will remove names from emails before passing them along.  Our principal Eric McDowell has requested that the PTSA help collect anonymous feedback so that people who feel less comfortable coming to him directly, can still have a voice as this new program gets going.  Thanks so much for your participation!

Bellevue School District News

Virtue of the month is Courage

The Bellevue School District virtue of the month is 'Courage'.  Courage is personal bravery in the face of fear.  It is doing what needs to be done even when it is really hard or scary.  Courage is needed when learning new skills.  Bystanders show courage when they stand up for students who are being treated unkindly.  Mark Twain famously stated that "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not [the] absence of fear."

Bullying Prevention and Social Skills Curriculum

BSD is launching a new Bullying Prevention and Social Skills Curriculum.  Please make plans to attend one of three Information Nights about the new curriculum, co-sponsored by the District and the Bellevue Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) Council.

Mark Your Calendars

The first information night is Tuesday, October 11 at 5 p.m. at Newport High School.  Parents from all schools are invited to attend.  The forum will address:

  • What is bullying?
  • What is the District doing to prevent bullying?
  • Tools you can use to talk to your kids about bullying

Additional information nights will be held Tuesday, January 24 at Sammamish High School and Wednesday, March 21 at Interlake High School.

Wednesday, October 12 is "Unity Day."  Students, parents and school staff are encouraged to wear orange, as part of the national "Make it Orange and Make it End" bullying prevention campaign.  By working together, we can make sure all our students learn in a safe and civil environment.

Bellevue Schools Foundation's Fall Campaign is well under way.  The Fall Campaign raises funds to support a number of important programs, including VIBES, Starting Strong, Differentiated Learning, and other initiatives.

Our goal is to invest almost $900,00 in the district this year and you can make it happen!  If you'd like to help us keep our commitment to our kids, please consider a gift to the Foundation through our website or by returning the attached BSF Fall Campaign Flyer.  Volunteers will be making Phonathon calls Nov. 6th - 9th to families we haven't yet heard from.

Volunteer callers are needed for the Phonathon - If you enjoy talking to people and want to make a difference for Bellevue students, this is the perfect job for you!  Training and free pizza are provided.  High School students and bilingual volunteers are welcome.  Contact Katrina Freeburg, BSF Annual Giving Manager, at Katrina@bsfdn.org to sign up or for more information.

SAT Practice Test at Interlake High School on Saturday, October 8th

Dear Parents:

Don't miss out on this opportunity for your student to receive better scores on the SAT!

Interlake DECA will be hosting a Full-Length SAT Practice test this Saturday, October 8th at 8 am at Interlake High School Room 1809.

The test is a full-length SAT held in the same format as the official SATs.  The tests are SATs from previous years and are approved by the College Board.

Included with the test will be a Complete Score Report as well as an Assessment of Strengths and Weaknesses and an Improvement Plan!  For only $25 (brought day of or paid to the Interlake accountant beforehand), your son/dughter will have a chance to prepare and practice for this crucial test!  This test is highly recommended for the success of your son/daughter.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, "It is not enough to take steps which may some day lead to a goal; each step must be itself a goal and a step likewise."

This SAT Practice Test is that first 'step' to achieving that 'goal' -- whatever it is.  Don't miss this opportunity!
