Let's do Something about Education Funding
ODLE MAGAZINE FUNDRAISING DRIVE!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Attention Parents & Guardians:  We need your support!!!
They are only two more turn-in dates (Tuesday 10/7 & Friday 10/10) for the
Odle Middle School Magazine Sale
Please encourage your student to participate.  Order magazines (new or renewal) for your family or as gifts.  Ask friends, family, office colleagues, and neighbors to order as well.
40% of every magazine subscription dollar goes to Odle's ASB which supports school clubs, sports, supplies, transportation, student events & student planners.  To date, we have only sold $11,000 towards our goal of $40,000 in sales.   This fundraiser is entirely separate from the PTSA fundraiser.   Students can earn prizes and a GameWorks field trip.
Ordering on-line is a convenient way for parents, co-workers, students, or friends to support this fundraiser and the students still get credit for the sale.  Please help!
Use the following link to take you straight to the Odle Shopping Page.  Send this link to friends and family to ask them to order magazines and support our school:
Two parent volunteers are needed to help with paperwork and check-in at the Odle Flu Immunization Clinic on Monday, Oct. 13th.  Please consider coming in to get immunized and then staying to help out!   Contact PTSA's Volunteer Coordinator, Karin Zimprick, karinzi@microsoft.com to volunteer.
Volunteers needed to help with Magazine Drive - Parent volunteers are needed the following mornings to help with processing of Magazine orders turned in by Odle students.
       Tuesday Oct 7             Friday Oct 10
This is a great way to help with this very important fundraiser and meet some other Odle parents.   Please contact Cathi Hervey at herveyjc@hotmail.com or 865-8362 to volunteer.
Volunteer in the Odle Library - Our part-time librarian, Debbie McLeod, is looking for parents to help with shelving, processing books and magazines, book orders, inventory, etc.   Last year Odle had a full-time library assistant to help with these tasks, but the budget no longer supports that position.  Volunteers are needed anytime during the school day on Thursdays, Fridays, or alternate Wednesdays.  Email Cathy Habib at cathydavid.habib@verizon.net to volunteer.   A training session will be held on Wed, Oct. 8th, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. for volunteers who can attend.
Reflections - Does your student like to enter the state wide Reflections competition?  If so, please consider volunteering to be part of the Odle Reflections committee. Without a Reflections committee or chair, Odle students can not the Reflections.  Please consider volunteering a little bit of your time for this important literature and arts program for our students.  Contact Odle PTSA VP of Programs Laura Buchthal at rumba@msn.com  if you are interested on being on this committee.
GET PREPARED!  Emergency Preparedness
Did you donate the "optional" Emergency Preparedness Fee at Taking Care of Business?  If not, please consider making this small $5 per student payment to Odle Middle School in order to help the school & PTSA purchase necessary emergency supplies to take care of our children during the event of an emergency situation which keeps kids on campus.
Odle MS needs tarps and tents to provide shelter in the case of an emergency or disaster. We are gathering these through donations.  If you are cleaning up your camping gear and have some tarps or tents you don't need any more, the school would welcome the donation.  Contact Anne Reece anne.reece@verizon.net for more information.
SCHOOL NEWS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A note from Jerry Schaefer, Odle MS Principal:
Mr. Blough, Odle's new orchestra teacher, was injured in a boating accident on Lake Washington on September 27th. Mr. Blough was admitted to Harborview Hospital in Seattle with a fractured pelvis and broken leg. He is currently recovering from successful pelvis surgery at his parent's home.   Mr. Blough will be out 4-6 weeks undergoing rehabilitation. We are hopeful for a speedy recovery. Mr. Blough is anxiously anticipating his return to working with his orchestra students.

It is with great sadness that I inform you that this boating accident tragically took the life of Heather DeHart, orchestra director at Tyee Middle School. Situations of this magnitude are challenging to comprehend and the healing process often requires the support and involvement of the entire Bellevue School District.

A fund has been established at Bellevue Schools Foundation in memory of Ms. DeHart's  love of kids and music.  Rememberances can be made to the:
Heather DeHart Fund,  Bellevue School Foundation Music Endowment

Checks payable to Bellevue Schools Foundation and mailed to
12111 NE First Street #320, Bellevue, WA. 98005
or donate online at www.bsfdn.org

A student scholarship fund will also be established at the Music Department of Central Washington University in Ms. DeHart's name.

Flu Immunization Clinic offered at Odle - Monday, Oct. 13th
Odle students and their family members (parents, siblings who are 6 months and older) are welcome to stop by the Flu Immunization Clinic on Monday, Oct. 13th from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. in the Odle library.   Students and siblings must be accompanied by a parent.  The company that is administering the clinic will bill your insurance for the following carriers:  Medicare A - B, Secure Horizons, Aetna, Premera, Regence, Pacific Care.  If you do not have one of these insurers, you can still pay a small fee for the immunization.  Questions? Contact Odle School nurse, Sonja Reid at reids@bsd405.org

Washington State Healthy Youth Survey - Oct. 13th - 17th
Odle Middle School is participating in the Healthy Youth Survey during the week of Oct 13 - 17.   This survey is a statewide survey which asks questions that are related to students' increased risk of injury, poor health outcomes, and alcohol and drug use.  Survey results are used by schools, communities and the state and local health departments to plan programs to support ur youth and reduce their risks.

The survey will be taken by students in grades 6 and 8 and it is voluntary and anonymous.   Additional information about the survey and directions on how to opt-out of the surveycan be found at www.hyw.wa.gov

Navigating Through Middle School:  Sixth Grade Parent Night
Thursday, October 16, 2008
6:30 - 7:30 PM
Odle Middle School, MUR

Learn tips to help your 6th grader have a successful start to middle school:
· Communicating with teachers and school staff
· Helping your child with homework and using the planner
· Opportunities for your child to get extra help: tutorial and homework club
· Providing social connections for your child through extracurricular activities
· Using Parent Internet Viewer and teacher's web pages
· Attendance policies

IMPORTANT!   Drop-Off and Pick-Up:  Please help alleviate traffic jams!
In order that all parents are able to drop off and pick up their Odle student in a timely and safe manner, and to ensure that Odle traffic DOES NOT back up into 8th St. and the light, the following is being asked of all drivers/cars during the AM/PM drop off and pick up times.
  • ALWAYS form 2 lines when pulling into the parking lot in front of the school
  • DO NOT leave your car unattended in these 2 drop off/pick up lanes.
  • ALWAYS pull your car up as far as you can in these 2 lines: making sure to move forward as the car in front of you moves forward
  • ALWAYS watch for children as they move to meet their ride
  • ALWAYS keep a continual flow of movement in these two lines - DO NOT stop to wait for your child unless you see them and they see you as well
  • PLEASE do not block the crosswalks or the access road to the back parking lot of the Bellevue Aquatic Center
All student pick-up after 2:45 PM, should be done so on the SOUTH side of the building for student safety. Pick-up times on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are 2:33 PM (after school), 3:07 PM (after tutorial), and 4:10 PM (after activities). On Wednesdays, pick-up is at 1:23 PM. Please make sure you are on time to pick your child up. If your child is waiting longer than 15 minutes for a ride, for safety, your child maybe escorted to Club Bellevue, a supervised activity.

We GREATLY appreciate your partnership in this effort to eliminate traffic issues at Odle.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation and aid.

"Let's do something about state education funding"
(A Proposal for the Basic Education Finance Joint Task Force)
Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, 7pm
Sammamish High School Performing Arts Center

Washington State's education funding system is broken. Increasing costs and declining funds to public schools continue to create chronic underfunding which affects every student in Bellevue and forces the district to use levy dollars to fund basic education programs.
2008-2009 could begin the change.  For more than a year, the WA Joint Task Force on Basic Education Finance has been studying the education funding problems facing our state.  Its report and suggestions to the legislature are due in December 2008.  Finally, there will be a serious and open discussion in Olympia about what our kids need and how we can help them get it. The Task Force has been working on two monumental issues important to BSD and the State:
·        redefining basic public education to include all that our children need for success
·        developing an appropriate funding mechanism for our schools
This presentation will discuss a serious proposal to address these issues; and how we can help.

After the presentation, questions from the Board and audience will be answered.  For event information or to submit questions in advance, contact Bellevue PTSA Council President Janet Suppes  janetpta@gmail.com or Legislative Chair Connie Gerlitz dgerlitz2@comcast.net
