Directions"Directions" Notebooks Now Available in
English and Spanish

"Directions: Resources for Your Child's Care" is a notebook developed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health to help parents who have children with special needs maintain their medical and educational records in one portable, convenient place. It also includes informative, easy-to-read, one-page summaries relating to everyday care, early intervention, parental rights, special education programs, IEPs, emergency planning, transitions, and a wide variety of other topics important to parents of children with special needs.

"Directions" is now available for the first time in Spanish. Portuguese versions will be available within the next month. "Directions" was adapted by Danbury Children First for use by Latino/Hispanic families and Brazilian families under a grant provided by The Robert G. and Marguerite M. Derx Foundation.

Copies of the book in English and Spanish are available at Danbury Children First's offices. Individual chapters can be downloaded from our website by connecting to the link below. For more information, call Caroline LaFleur at 797-8088.

LeeYSeras "Lee y serás" Early Literacy Class to Begin on September 29

Lee y serás is an innovative literacy program for Latino families that helps them prepare their young children for reading and learning before kindergarten. It is conducted as a series of family conversation workshops that help families learn how everyday activities, such as singing, cooking, and storytelling, can contribute to literacy development. These workshops will be conducted in Spanish. Lee y serás was created by Scholastic Corporation, the National Council of La Raza, and Verizon.

The next Lee y serás program will begin on September 29 and continue for six weeks. Most sessions will be conducted at the Danbury Library. The program is co-sponsored by the Danbury Public Schools Extended Learning Program and Danbury Children First, with support from the Albert Wasworth and Helen Clark Meserve Memorial Fund. Childcare and a light dinner are provided. Each family receives a free children's book for each session they attend.

For more information, and to register, call Gloria Mora at 203-797-8088. To see a copy of the flyer, click on the link below.
