DCFI Logo Candidate Forum to Be Held on October 16

Danbury Children First and Connecticut Parent Power are co-sponsoring a Candidate Forum on the evening of October 16. US Congressional candidates from the Fifth District and Connecticut State Senate and House of Representative Candidates have been invited to attend. The focus: Issues that affect children and families in the Danbury area. The Forum will be held at Broadview Middle School in the auditorium (with childcare available in the cafeteria). The evening will begin with a reception for parents and voter registration at 5:30. The Forum will begin at 6:30.

We need your help. We would like parent input on developing the questions that will be posed to the candidates that evening. We're looking for questions from parents, grandparents, and caregivers that might fall into the following categories:

  • Early Care (Care4Kids subsidies, affordable and accessible preschool, school readiness funding, etc.)
  • Education (parent involvement, education funding, etc.)
  • Health (HUSKY, access to services, affordability of healthcare, etc.)
  • Parent Leadership (PLTI funding, funding for parent support programs, playgroups, etc.)

Questions in other categories are also welcome. Please keep in mind that the focus of questions should be on statewide and national issues, rather than municipal or town issues, as the forum is for State and Congressional Candidates. Your help in developing questions will be greatly appreciated. Please email your questions to Caroline LaFleur at carolinel@danburychildrenfirst.org by September 2.

Contact Danbury Children First with your questions.
GirlwithHat Now Recruiting for Parent Leadership Class

The Danbury Parent Leadership Training Institute is now recruiting members for the class of 2009! If you're interested in working in the community to benefit your children and other children, this class is a great opportunity. You'll learn about: how the state and city operate; how you can work with others to get things done for kids; and how to acquire the skills you need to become a leading advocate for children. Check out the YouTube video of PLTI at http://www.cga.ct.gov/COC/plti_video.htm.

The class is FREE and meets for 20 weeks beginning in January 2009. Childcare and dinner are always provided. If you're interested in applying, you can dowload an application by clicking the link below. Or call Lauren Halpin at 797-8088 to learn more.

Now Registering for TOPS Soccer

The Danbury Youth Soccer Club is now accepting registrations for its TOPSoccer program for children with special needs. This is a fantastic program for children from ages 5 to 18 who have special needs and just want to get out and have a little fun learning soccer skills and getting exercise. The program runs at 4 pm on Saturday afternoons at the Kenosia Soccer fields, beginning on September 6, 2008

Volunteers are also needed for this program. This is a very rewarding way for teens to get some community service hours. Adult volunteers are also needed to help keep this very valuable program running. For more information, call Vicky Ceylan at 748-3726 or Lauren Ziegler at 743-9628. Or click on the link below to download the registration form.
