New state superintendent urges parents and families to join PTA
Why join?

Tom Torlakson

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson says:

'Learning starts at home. And joining PTA can help you to stay informed and involved in your children's education when they're in school. Besides helping your own children, PTA helps all children by giving parents and other caring adults a crucial voice in our schools.'

This year, the voice of parents at local schools and in Sacramento is more important than ever.

Your PTA can help by actively reaching out to find more new members now and in the coming months. Strengthening your PTA is a year-round effort. State policymakers take note when our PTA ranks are growing.

The new State Superintendent of Public Instruction knows how powerful PTA membership is - for your family and for all the children and families of California.
Here are some proven ways to build new membership in the new year.
  • Invite people to join in person. Here are some ideas for key messages to use.
  • Develop a short "elevator" speech (30 seconds to three minutes long) on why someone should join. Click here for some ideas you can use in developing your appeal, depending on the audience.
  • Be prepared when someone says no, and have answers ready. Get some tips here.
To help you build membership in your PTA, we have a new Membership Kit that offers a step-by-step guide to help plan your campaign. Click here to find it.
Use new fliers to promote membership

We have new fliers featuring testimonials from PTA and other education leaders about the importance of PTA membership. They are ready for you to customize to include your PTA's contact information, in English and in Spanish.
