Build your PTA!
All that you do for children at your school deserves the applause of your school and community. All those clapping hands can show their support by becoming members, adding their voices to the applause. Clapping hands are important for another reason: They are taking the first steps toward becoming helping hands. Applaud yourself for all you do for your school. Then take a moment to imagine all you could do with more members, more helping hands. Invite participants at your Founders Day celebration and past Honorary Service Award recipients who attend to renew their support of your PTA by joining. Consider personalizing, printing and distributing the new fliers "Why Join PTA?" (Available in English and in Spanish.) For the fliers, click here. For midyear membership ideas, click here.

Founders Day is Feb. 17
The National Congress of Mothers was founded by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst in Washington, D.C., on February 17, 1897, to press for the first child labor laws. National PTA became the name in 1970 when it united with the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, founded in 1926 by Selena Sloan Butler. Over the decades, PTA was instrumental in creating the juvenile justice system and testing the first polio vaccine. PTA penny kitchens served the first school lunches. Today California State PTA is fighting for effective and adequate school funding and essential services for families.
Founders Day offers an opportunity to celebrate PTA's history and your PTA's work. Honor the people who make a difference for your PTA with Honorary Service Awards (HSAs), which fund state PTA scholarships and grants, at a Founders Day program. For ideas and activities, click here. For information on HSAs, click here.

Important financial news!
TAXES - Starting this year: ■ Every unit, council, and district will need to file some version of the California Form 199 starting with the 2010 tax return. ■ Every PTA will need to apply for a Charitable Trust number by December 31, 2012 and start filing an annual RRF-1 Form. ■ A Charitable Trust number will be required to apply to hold raffles or gaming events, and it can take several weeks to obtain the number from the Attorney General's office. For information, click here. INSURANCE: Correction - The 2011 Insurance & Loss Prevention Guide you received included the wrong website for PTA's insurance broker. The correct website for BB&T Insurance Services of California, Inc., is www.pta.bbt-knight.com. The user name and password are correct. To prepare for any associated risks while planning your activities, review the guide and contact the broker. AUDITS: Midyear audits need to be adopted by the membership and forwarded through channels. For full audit information, click here.
