 Legislation Action Alert

October 20, 2010

Take action for California's

children on November 2

The statewide election is less than two weeks away, so now is the time to ensure that you and your fellow PTA members are ready to make informed choices in the November 2 election.  With almost 1 million members statewide, PTA members are a strong force, but only if we exercise it by educating ourselves about the issues and candidates and casting our ballots.

  • Who will succeed Jack O'Connell as the Superintendent of Public Instruction?  Click here to read what the two candidates had to say in response to our PTA questionnaire:

Please share this information with your fellow PTA members and, above all else, don't forget to vote on November 2!

Be sure to check the postage required if you are sending in an absentee ballot.

California State PTA supports Proposition 24 to repeal three permanent corporate tax reductions struck in the 2008 and 2009 budget agreements.

  • When fully implemented, these would cost the state an estimated $1.3 billion a year.
  • Most of the benefit of these tax cuts would go to a small number of very large corporations.
  • PTA believes that this is not the time to give tax breaks to corporations, when our schools have faced over $17 billion in cuts in the previous two years and we have seen devastating cuts to critical health and social services.

California State PTA supports Proposition 25 to reform the state budget process, as we believe it will protect taxpayers by encouraging lawmakers to stop making closed-door deals and start moving forward with real solutions for our troubled economy.  It will allow us to set the priorities that matter to us as Californians, and make urgently needed investments in our children and our future.  The proposition:

  • Would allow a majority of legislators to approve the budget, rather than the two-thirds vote currently required.  Does not lower the two-thirds vote required to raise taxes.
  • Holds legislators accountable by ensuring that they would forfeit their pay and benefits for each day the budget is overdue - no budget, no pay.
