Alex Kajitani
California 2009 Teacher of the Year Alex Kajitani, shown rapping about math instruction at the California State PTA Convention in 2009, has seen the difference PTA makes.  Kajitani, also known as "The Rappin' Mathematician" at Mission Middle School in Escondido, San Diego County, has this to say:

"Our school started its first PTA a couple of years ago, and it has made a difference. Schools can be intimidating, but PTA lets parents know they are not alone. It really gives them a forum for ideas and ways that they can be more involved.  And there's such a direct link between parent involvement and achievement."

Consider sharing this quote with teachers when you ask them to join your PTA and help you to promote PTA membership.

Joining PTA allows teachers to partner with parents for improved communication and collaboration to focus on what students need to be successful learners.

Teachers in the know, including 2009 California Teacher of the Year Alex Kajitani, count on their PTA membership to enhance their partnership with parents. And their membership in turn serves as a model for parents who want to be effectively involved in their children's education.

Here are a few ideas on effective ways to encourage teachers to join your PTA.
  • Create an invitation just for teachers. Don't assume they know they are needed and welcomed. Enlist the support of the principal in asking teachers to join.

  • Provide a breakfast for teachers at the beginning of the term. Use this as an opportunity to talk about the value and importance of joining and partnering with PTA.

  • Make sure teachers know about PTA's continuing education grants available to teachers, counselors and school nurses.

  • Place visible stars on the classroom doors of teachers who join.
