Celebrate the Founders Day centennial by honoring your volunteers

Founders Day was first celebrated on February 17, 1910. For Founders Day program ideas, click here.

Founders Day traditions:

  • Honor your own outstanding volunteers with Honorary Service Awards. The money goes to fund grants and scholarships of the California State PTA.  For information, click here.

  • Buy gift memberships for community memers, grandparents and others who have helped your PTA.
Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Selena Sloan Butler are the three founders recognized on this day.  PTA was founded to fight for the education and well-being of children, and was instrumental in creating universal kindergarten, the  juvenile justice system and child labor laws. PTA "penny kitchens" became the model for today's school lunch program. For more on the history of PTA, click

Ways to help Haiti

If your PTA wishes to participate in relief assistance for Haiti, please review the California State PTA Toolkit sections, available in English and Spanish, online at www.capta.org.
  • 5.8.7 Handling Requests for Relief Assistance, p. 205
  • 5.3.12a Providing Documentation to Donors, p. 188
  • Donation Receipt, in the Forms section, p. 318
PTAs may donate to The Red Cross, which is one of the lead agencies helping in Haiti. However it must approved by the association and accomplished by check, not through an online link.

The Budget Squeeze

Many California school districts are facing dire cuts as they plan next year's budget because of the state's financial situation. Local school boards will have to make tough decisions, and PTAs have a role to play in assuring that process is transparent and includes parent input.

Counting on us

The U.S. Constitution requires a Census every decade. 2010 Census questionnaires will arrive in March. View lesson plans, maps, teaching guides, and other informational materials to help teachers, students and parents learn about the importance of this count. Learn more with the Full Fact Sheet [PDF] and the website www.census.gov/schools/

Why is the U.S. census count important for schools?
Government agencies use the data to make funding decisions, including: Title 1 allocations, college grant and loan programs, public transportation, road and community improvements, public health services and neighborhood improvements.
