PTA and Summer? You Bet!

The school year is ending, and summer is just around the corner. After working hard all year, you are ready for a well-deserved break.

Before you put aside your PTA responsibilities, take a few moments to prepare for the next year.

It will make a big difference for your PTA when the new school year begins, whether you are continuing in your current position or turning it over to someone new.

Here are some steps to take:

  • Encourage outgoing officers and chairs to meet with the volunteers who will replace them. Outgoing volunteers should explain their jobs and turn over their updated procedure books and other relevant materials. It's a good idea for the incoming president to sit in on these meetings, if possible. The chats can be done individually or as part of one big "Transition Meeting."

  • Make sure PTA financial books are up-to-date and audited. Make arrangements to change the signature cards for the PTA bank account if there are new officers.

  • Plan to start your membership drive as soon as parents start returning to school - for instance, when classroom assignments are posted at the elementary school or during registration at high school. Plan your membership drive now and line up volunteers to avoid a last-minute scramble. If your school sends out a summer mailing, ask your principal to include PTA membership information.

Spending time now to prepare for the next school year will help assure that your PTA has a great new start!
